Senior Business Development Manger
The Senior Business Development Manager (Senior Manager) will focus on cross-practice collaboration and client growth through the execution of the firm’s Client Service Team, Sector Connect and Client Feedback Programs. Working closely with attorneys, business development colleagues, and other internal stakeholders, the Senior Manager drives the execution of these programs for their assigned client and sector teams. Responsibilities include orchestrating strategic meetings, advancing cross-functional business development efforts, guiding the development and execution of integrated pursuit and growth plans, identifying clients and sectors that may benefit from a coordinated, team-based approach, and launching new client and sector teams in alignment with firm priorities. This position also supports broader business development requests from practices and partners, including strategic pitch opportunities, client and industry targeting, and related growth and collaboration initiatives. The Senior Manager may also provide support for lateral integration and attorney coaching initiatives as required to advance these programs and firm priorities. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in leading strategic client or sector teams, with a focus on collaboration, client growth, and cross-practice engagement within a law firm or professional services environment.
The Senior Manager works collaboratively with the Marketing and Business Development Manager/Specialist (MBDM/S) practice support team and the core Business Development team. This position will be responsible for proactively driving business development activity across the firm, while maintaining awareness of and providing input on marketing efforts that are being directly handled by other members of the Marketing and Business Development Department (Department) that impact business development efforts. Essential duties are performed independently or in conjunction with other members of the Department. The Senior Manager exercises discretion and independent judgment while working under the general direction of the Director of Client Intelligence and according to established firm policies and procedures.
The Senior Business Development Manager can be located in the Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas, New York, or Washington, D.C. office.

Develop and maintain a thorough and specific understanding of Katten’s practice capabilities, including prior experience, clients and industries served, and distinguishing characteristics of each practice area. Work with Business Development and MBDM/S teams to identify opportunities for cross-practice collaboration and client expansion across the firm. Evaluate these opportunities and facilitate their coordinated pursuit. Lead and manage assigned Client Service Teams and Sector Connect groups to drive business development and client growth by: Fostering collaboration among attorneys to identify and pursue new business opportunities. Orchestrating and leading strategic meetings to advance business development initiatives and ensure alignment with firm priorities. Providing strategic oversight and direction for team meetings, setting priorities, and ensuring accountability for business development initiatives. Facilitating the development, drafting, and execution of business development and pursuit plans, including identifying collaboration and cross-practice client expansion opportunities. Maintaining a deep understanding of assigned clients, sectors, and strategic priorities, and communicating relevant updates to team members and stakeholders. Identifying opportunities to establish new client and sector teams that support client growth, cross-practice collaboration, and firm strategic priorities, and lead the launch of these teams. Support the implementation of the firm’s Client Feedback Program, including assisting with interview follow-up and action items. Contribute to the development and execution of internal education initiatives to ensure attorneys are aware of the firm’s full range of services to support collaboration and cross-practice client expansion. Serve as a resource for business development requests from practices, including pitch and proposal support, client and industry targeting, and business development planning. Maintain awareness of firmwide marketing initiatives and provide strategic input to ensure alignment with business development objectives. Provide support for lateral integration and attorney coaching initiatives as needed. Support other firmwide client development and expansion efforts, and other projects as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This role may supervise and manage business development team members and will carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Firm’s policies and applicable laws.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business or related field, and ten or more years of related experience are required; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Significant business development experience is required. Prior experience working in a large legal or professional services firm is preferred, as is experience leading collaborative client and industry teams. Demonstrated ability to drive cross-practice client expansion and foster collaboration among attorneys and business development professionals. Strong business and client development acumen with the ability to effectively articulate the firm’s value proposition and practice/attorney differentiation. Highly motivated self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced organization, maintains a growth mindset and intellectual curiosity, and demonstrates agility and a positive attitude in an ever-changing environment. Deep knowledge of services and capabilities of legal practices. Must develop credibility by building upon that knowledge, specific to the practices supported at Katten. Understanding of the business of law firms and client relationship management. Strong independent judgment and the ability to establish and manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a demanding, fast-paced, deadline-driven, detail-oriented work environment. Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and precision in both analysis and written work product. Ability to communicate with courtesy and diplomacy to maintain effective relationships with a diverse group of attorneys and business professionals. Superior analytical and critical thinking skills that support strong problem-solving capabilities. Excellent project and time management skills, including the ability to develop project plans, coordinate projects, communicate changes and progress, complete projects on time and manage project team activities. Proficiency with business research tools, ERM and CRM systems, and the ability to utilize firm systems to synthesize and effectively present client data and financial metrics. Ability to leverage data and analytics to inform business development strategies and measure outcomes. Ability to understand and support the firm’s goals, services, culture and strategy in order to represent the firm in a positive, professional manner. Ability and availability to occasionally travel to other firm locations. Ability to occasionally retrieve and distribute marketing-related materials, written documentation, or office supplies weighing up to 20 pounds. Work occasionally requires more than 37.5 hours per week (35 hours per week in New York) to perform the essential duties of the position.
In our Washington, DC office, the annualized salary range for this position is $160,000 to $205,000. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
