Project Kuiper is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, and we’ve designed the system with the capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers, from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
Export Control Requirement
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
To deliver on that mission, Amazon is looking for talented candidates who are intellectually curious, have solved complex problems, and have a demonstrated ability to get the right things done quickly and effectively.
In this role, you’ll join Kuiper's Satellite Battery Design and Test team as a Cell Manufacturing Engineer to innovate and solve engineering issues that arise during Kuiper's processing of its Satellite Battery Cells (production, testing, storage, handling, shipping, etc.). You will be supporting the battery cell operations line alongside Design, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to improve operational efficiency, deploy new processes, and develop engineering dispositions related to non-conformances. You will work hard, have fun, and make history!
This Manufacturing Engineer may not require extensive battery cell or pack knowledge, but will require familiarity and expertise on manufacturing, electrical testing, operations, and industrial automation.
This position will work a typical Monday–Friday schedule, with rotating on‑call weekend support and will be expected to travel up to 20% depending on business needs. Although not routine, this role may require standing for long periods of time, climbing ladders, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching. The role may require lifting up to 25 pounds unassisted.
Key Job Responsibilities
Be the first point of contact between production, test, and design teams for operational support and triage of issues during battery cell testing and manufacturing.
Work to implement new tests, processes, and tools to aid the manufacturing, shipping, and testing of battery cells destined for satellite battery pack build.
Identify and implement opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, and robustness of all processes.
Develop standard repairs, rework procedures, propose design‑for‑manufacturing improvements, improved processes and work instructions, and training for new operators and technicians.
Develop reporting tools on manufacturing KPIs, lead small integrated product teams between customers, stakeholders, and suppliers.
Work with Quality, Manufacturing, and Engineering experts to provide root‑cause failure analyses.
Travel to vendor sites as needed to support operational monitoring, ensuring production quality and uptime.
Manage third‑party vendors to install capital equipment, train technicians, and maintain quality of work.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field, or equivalent experience.
3+ years of demonstrated experience in an operations, design, or test role within the battery, energy storage, consumer electronics, automotive, aviation, or space industry.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production.
Demonstrated ability to manage technical projects from inception through execution.
Fundamental knowledge of battery cell and pack electrochemistry, manufacturing, and test.
Familiarity with modern cell abuse/characterization testing and cell test equipment.
Experience deploying solutions to solve complex and ambiguous problems in manufacturing, automation, and test.
Proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or similar) to analyze test data, manufacturing metrics, and process performance for continuous improvement.
Experience with statistical process control and other quality engineering methods.
