Job Summary: The Orthopedic Technician is a specifically trained allied health care individual who assists health care professionals in the practice of medicine. They assist Orthopedic Surgeons in the care of sick and disabled persons, providing consultation, evaluation, treatment, and preventative care. This classification applies to entry‑level Orthopedic Technicians who have graduated from an Orthopedic Technician training program and do not meet the requirements of Orthopedic Technician II.

Essential Responsibilities

Applies, adjusts, and removes casts; assembles traction apparatus; fits strappings and splints for orthopaedic patients.

Covers injured areas with protective materials such as stockinette bandages, gauze, or rubber pads in preparation for cast application.

Understands and utilizes aseptic techniques in dressing changes and setting up surgical fields.

Wets, wraps, and molds plaster bandages around fracture areas.

Assists Orthopedic Surgeons in the reduction of fractures.

Trims plaster and removes whole or broken casts; alters cast position as directed.

Assembles wooden, metal, plastic, or plaster material to make orthopaedic splints.

Rigs pulleys, ropes, and frames to assemble fracture beds and attaches traction supports to patients’ limbs, adjusting support to specified tension.

Adjusts crutches, canes, braces, and splints to fit patients.

Removes sutures and staples and changes dressings.

Secures provider orders before providing care.

Instructs patients and assists them in walking with casts, braces, crutches, and other orthopaedic apparatus.

Documents interventions in the medical record; maintains supplies in cast and treatment rooms, including ordering and stocking materials.

Assists in scheduling follow‑up and consultation appointments with specialists.

Calls patients to arrange follow‑up visits.

Acts as technical advisor to hospital staff regarding orthopaedic devices and equipment.

Performs other related duties as required.
