As the organization’s spokesperson and communications leader, the Director oversees all media relations, internal and external communications, reputation management, message development, and digital communications. The Director serves as a strategic advisor to the President & CEO and liaison to the Public Housing Authority and local partners. This role requires critical thinking, independent execution, strategic and operational planning, and long‑term and short‑term goal setting.

Responsibilities

Manage the agency’s external communications activities, serving as the primary media spokesperson.

Respond agilely to media events and ensure timely, appropriate reactions.

Develop and execute crisis communication plans and lead rapid response during emergencies.

Create and implement proactive risk‑assessment strategies and maintain consistent messaging across all channels.

Craft compelling narratives that engage audiences and drive decisive action.

Develop Opportunity Home’s social media strategy and execute communications on appropriate platforms.

Produce key communication projects, including the annual report, digital newsletters, and other deliverables.

Oversee media initiatives, both new and legacy, ensuring effective execution.

Strengthen relationships with residents and stakeholders through proactive engagement.

Mentor and supervise communication staff, cultivating the next generation of leaders.

Use data and analytics to define and pursue ambitious communication goals.

Guide ideation and creation of digital content (web, video, infographics, social media).

Maintain and enhance the agency website design, functionality, and content.

Prepare communications for the Board of Commissioners to keep them informed and engaged.

Oversee editorial content and media releases, including news releases and media advisories.

Lead media relations, providing media training and preparing spokespersons for interviews.

Build and nurture relationships with community leaders and media members.

Disseminate accurate information during emergency or crisis situations.

Develop and manage effective internal communications for employees.

Plan, implement, and promote external news conferences.

Develop and manage the communications department budget.

Strategically measure and analyze communication effectiveness using KPIs.

Participate in Trauma–Informed Care initiatives and related training.

Adhere to ethical use of Generative AI solutions.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications Education (Required) : Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.

Experience (Required) :

12 years of experience in communications, public relations, and/or journalism.

5 years of management experience.

Successful completion of background and drug screening checks.

Preferred Education / Experience :

Master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.

Professional certifications such as CMP, ABC, APR, or digital marketing certifications.

Experience with cloud diagram tools (e.g., LucidChart) and VPN access.

Licenses & Certifications (Required) :

Texas Class “C” driver’s license.

Ability to earn additional certifications as required.

Technical Skills :

AP Style, multimedia, video editing/production.

Content development across new and legacy media.

Budget management and staff supervision.

Proficiency in proposal writing, statistical reports, and oral communication.

Knowledge of local media outlets and online/print news sources.

Strong writing, editing, and oral communication abilities.

Understanding of journalism, design, and marketing strategies.

Experience in building media relationships and briefing on Media Law.

Experience using media relations systems.

Experience developing and implementing comprehensive communication strategies.
