This is a remote CICS Systems Programmer opportunity for a major firm located in Nanuet, New York.
The position offers a competitive full‑time salary of $120,000‑$130,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package.
Description
The role involves the installation, maintenance, and tuning of the Customer Information Control System (CICS) on IBM’s z/OS mainframe operating system.
Responsible for system installation and maintenance using the System Modification Program Extended (SMP/E): installing, configuring, and upgrading CICS Transaction Server and related software, and applying vendor patches and new product releases.
Performance and capacity management: monitoring system performance, identifying bottlenecks, and tuning CICS regions to meet service level agreements (SLAs) using tools such as RMF and OMEGAMON.
Problem resolution: troubleshooting and debugging complex system and application issues, including analysis of system dumps and coordination with software vendors.
Developer support: providing technical support to application development teams, setting up and managing CICS regions, and defining application resources.
System integration: collaborating with other z/OS systems programmers to integrate CICS with subsystems such as DB2 and MQ.
Disaster recovery and security: assisting in planning, testing, and executing disaster recovery procedures, and implementing security protocols using RACF.
Automation: developing and implementing automation scripts using languages like REXX to streamline system management and improve efficiency.
Qualifications and Essential Skills
Deep knowledge of CICS Transaction Server architecture, internal interfaces, and resource management.
Strong command of z/OS operating system utilities, including JCL, TSO/ISPF, and SMP/E.
Excellent analytical and diagnostic skills for troubleshooting in a high‑pressure, production‑critical environment.
Experience with mainframe programming languages such as COBOL, JCL, and REXX.
Familiarity with other core mainframe products such as DB2, IMS, and MQ Series.
Strong communication and teamwork abilities for collaborating with application teams, management, and other IT groups.
Proactive approach to continuous learning and staying updated on evolving mainframe technologies, including cloud integration and automation.
Legal eligibility: must possess a green card or U.S. citizenship; no visa entanglements or H1‑B submittals required.
Typical Work Environment The role supports mission‑critical applications that require 24/7 availability.
Engineers may need to participate in on‑call rotations, after‑hours, or weekend work to support system maintenance and minimize disruption.
The environment is dynamic, highly collaborative, and involves interaction with various IT and business teams.
