Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

team to provide high‑quality, evidence‑based psychiatric care to incarcerated individuals in our correctional healthcare setting. This role collaborates with an interdisciplinary care team to ensure comprehensive mental health treatment and continuity of care.
Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, evaluations, and risk screenings to diagnose mental health conditions and determine appropriate levels of care.
Develop, implement, and manage individualized treatment plans for patients with mental health and co‑occurring disorders.
Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications in accordance with evidence‑based guidelines, clinical protocols, and collaborative care practices.
Monitor patient response to psychiatric medications and adjust treatment regimens as clinically indicated.
Provide crisis intervention and support for patients experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms, including suicidal ideation or self‑injurious behaviors.
Collaborate closely with behavioral health staff, medical providers, and custody to support integrated care and ensure safety, continuity, and quality of services.
Participate in mental health multidisciplinary team meetings, treatment planning conferences, and case reviews.
Document all patient encounters, assessments, treatments, and progress notes accurately and timely in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) per regulatory and facility standards.
Maintain strict adherence to confidentiality requirements, HIPAA regulations, and ethical principles in psychiatric care.
Educate patients on their mental health diagnoses, treatment options, and medication adherence; promote patient engagement in their own care.
Support professional development of nursing and mental health staff by providing consultation, mentorship, and clinical guidance on psychiatric conditions and care approaches.
Provide on‑call psychiatric coverage as assigned to meet facility and patient care needs, including after‑hours support when necessary.
Promote a trauma‑informed, recovery‑oriented, and culturally competent approach to mental health care.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to psychiatric care, mental health documentation, and outcomes monitoring.
Maintain professional licensure and certifications and participate in continuing education to remain current in psychiatric and correctional healthcare practices.
Follow all facility policies regarding safety, infection control, security, and emergency response.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
A current, valid, and unrestricted state license, certification, or credential authorizing practice in the applicable clinical role (NP, RN, etc.) is required.
High School diploma or GED is required.
Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a concentration or certification in Psychiatric‑Mental Health (PMHNP) is required.
A current, valid DEA registration with authority to prescribe controlled substances, including psychotropic medications, is required.
Board certification as a Psychiatric‑Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP‑BC) is strongly preferred.
Minimum of 3–5 years of clinical experience as an NP, with at least 2 years focused on psychiatric or behavioral health care; correctional healthcare or work with underserved populations is highly preferred.
Experience in psychiatric assessments, medication management, crisis intervention, and interdisciplinary collaboration is essential.
Active CPR/BLS certification is required.
Working knowledge of HIPAA, mental health standards of care, and applicable federal and state behavioral health regulations.
Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) and ability to document efficiently and accurately in a fast‑paced environment.
