Summary of Role The Tax Manager is responsible for the efficient, accurate, complete, and timely preparation of all clients' tax returns whether prepared personally or by supervision of others. Advanced technical skills in a variety of tax and accounting areas, along with well‑developed and applied management and supervisory skills are required. The Tax Manager may have input on any tax issue presented.

Responsibilities

Prepare high‑net‑worth clients’ individual, estate, gift and fiduciary tax returns (1040, 1041, 706, and 709) personally or under supervision.

Perform technical tax reviews and manage governmental tax examinations and trust accountings.

Assume full responsibility for larger tax returns and delegate as necessary.

Delegate, manage, and perform tax research projects to achieve an accurate and efficient product.

Participate actively in client meetings and sophisticated tax planning efforts involving estate, gift and fiduciary consulting; review and advise on clients’ estate plans.

Act as a resource for the tax preparation team and A&A staff on estate, trust and gift tax issues; stay informed on technical standards and tax law.

Assist and supervise the tax preparer with complex returns.

Review wills and trusts pertinent to estate and fiduciary income tax returns.

Assume client‑service responsibility for clients the manager works directly with or where responsibility is delegated from the partner.

Communicate important tax developments to firm personnel.

Maintain familiarity with staff qualifications and review assignments for appropriateness.

Assist in recruiting, performance evaluations, training aids, and instruction in professional development programs.

Ensure smooth flow of tax returns through the system for accurate, complete, and timely delivery.

Possess a complete knowledge of the firm’s philosophy and its opinions on tax matters.

Maintain knowledge of general economic and political trends affecting legislation that may impact the business climate.

Participate in practice development through referral sources, community, and industry activities.

Manage engagement profitability – billings and collections.

Participate in firm committees and management meetings.

Proficient with computer tax‑preparation, tax‑research, and tax‑planning software.

Operate required computer, calculator, and software for estate tax and valuation.

Willingness to become part of the firm’s Mentoring Program.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Strong interpersonal skills, including proven experience liaising with clients.

Self‑starter with ability to work independently and use good judgment.

Participant in a career development program to improve managerial, communication, and interpersonal skills.

What Skills and Experience You'll Bring

5+ years of experience performing research and providing quality technical advice.

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or related field, plus CPA certification.

Master of Science degree in Taxation or a J.D. highly preferred for this management position.

Minimum of 40 hours of continuing education required each year to maintain and develop technical and business skills, and maintain license requirements.

California income tax experience required.
