Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking to hire a Staff Systems Safety Engineer to join its team in
Colorado Springs, CO
and support the Sentinel program. The role supports the Air Force’s sustainment, development, production, and deployment of hardware and system modifications for Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Ground and Airborne Launch Control Systems.
What You Will Do The Staff Systems Safety Engineer will influence design to meet safety expectations and requirements for Northrop Grumman products. The incumbent will independently analyze and recommend design features that meet safety criteria in system design to control or eliminate hazards. Responsibilities include:
Active participation in the design of products/systems, supporting equipment, and facilities.
Creation of functional specifications and establishment of safety requirements for assigned systems.
Development of safety documents to support customer and test/operational range requirements.
Performance of audits of operational areas and reporting on the effectiveness of the system safety program.
Evaluation of the interrelationship of system safety requirements and other aspects of concept design and development to ensure a cost‑effective program.
Applicants should have extensive expertise in the application of MIL‑STD‑882E, DO‑178, DO‑254, software development, design development, or similar systems engineering experience. Experience in generating or reviewing design artifacts for system safety analyses in maturing weapons system design for safety and support flight test and flight worthiness of complex systems is essential.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university and 12 years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree, 10 years with a Master’s, or 8 years with a Ph.D.
U.S. Citizen with an active DoD Secret Clearance with an investigation date within the last 6 years.
Successfully screened for Enhanced Security Clearances within a reasonable time as determined by the company.
3 years of Model Based Systems Engineering experience.
3 years of experience with requirements development and decomposition.
3 years of experience with MIL‑STD‑882E used in support of Preliminary, Functional, Subsystem, System, Operating, and Support Hazard Analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
Lead a team in software safety processes during Engineering and Manufacturing Development Phase.
Experience developing in an Agile environment.
Experience using DO‑178 or DO‑254 for design development.
Experience developing missile flight systems software.
Associate Safety Professional (ASP) / Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certificate.
Weapon System experience (Minuteman III or similar military or industry experience).
Active Top Secret clearance with investigation in the last 6 years.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine‑hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
Primary Level Salary Range: $155,400.00 – $233,200.00. The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s experience, education, skills, and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses reward individual contributions and company results. Employees in vice president or director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
