Controls Field Service Technician

Position Overview
The Controls Field Service Technician repairs and services equipment and machinery at customer facilities for both warranty and non‑warranty issues. The role includes providing information to create service quotations, processing service orders for customers, executing service contracts to completion, managing longer‑term service contracts, and serving as the main service contact for strategic customer accounts.
Essential Job Duties
Must be able to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical equipment at the customer’s facility and make the necessary adjustments to bring equipment up to running status.
Able to access PLC and HMI programs and use trends and other debug tools for troubleshooting purposes.
Able to make programming changes online for retrofitting or upgrading equipment.
Understands and can set up servos, VFD’s, remote I/O, Ethernet & Profibus networks as well as other electronic controls equipment.
Must be able to interpret mechanical drawings and electrical and pneumatic schematics.
Must be able to troubleshoot electrical panels.
Operate machinery to demonstrate equipment operation and to analyze malfunctions.
Supervise operators and maintenance workers in testing, tuning and adjusting equipment to obtain optimum operating performance.
Advise management regarding customer satisfaction and product performance and make suggestions for product improvements.
Consult with customers/supervisors/managers to plan layout of equipment during line moves.
Resolve service requirements over the phone if possible.
Work with suppliers to resolve technical issues at customers’ sites.
Travel to both domestic and international customer locations.
Make recommendations to repair/replace only items that require repair/replacement.
Follow customer’s plant and safety regulations while at their facility.
Complete in detail a Service Report for the services provided in a timely manner.
Make follow‑up calls with the customer to verify that the problem has been resolved or organize future calls should the need be required.
Give guidance on what is a warranty/non‑warranty issue.
Responsible for keeping up with current products and equipment used at ATS.
Be available to be on call on a rotational basis and take the lead to help non‑service personnel on call at any time.
Responsible to meet or exceed customer expectations in an efficient manner.
Be able to make accurate equipment audits and reports.
Instruct and direct workers in servicing and repairing equipment.
Consult with engineering personnel to resolve unusual problems in system operation and maintenance.
Provide monthly reports detailing the previous month’s activities.
Maintain or exceed department’s work utilization requirements.
Assist other department staff as defined by the backend Service Manager.
Maintain International Standardization Organization (ISO) standards.
Must be familiar with NEC and NFPA 79 as well as international electrical standards.
Qualifications
Preferred college degree in engineering related field or equivalent experience.
Three to six (6) years of experience in a hands‑on mechanical/electrical environment.
Proficiency in Rockwell PLC’s, HMI’s, servo control preferred.
Must be able to work in a multi‑disciplined engineering environment, often under pressure and strict time constants.
Experience in dealing with customers to resolve problems is required.
The ability to read drawings, reference manuals and assembly systems instruction guides is essential.
Must have experience and be proficient with Microsoft Office suite.
Individuals must have the ability to gain knowledge to readily determine parts of an assembly.
Requires excellent interpersonal and commercial skills.
Job Specifications
The employee may be required to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.
Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
Visual acuity – Normal requirements for reading written instructions and computer screens.
Hearing ability – Normal requirements for understanding verbal instructions.
Working conditions – The employee is subject to a manufacturing environment with occasional exposure to high noise levels and exposure to physical hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts and electrical current.
Capable of wearing appropriate related PPE for extended periods of time.
