About the Job The Intake Clinician is a behavioral health professional responsible for facilitating admissions, clinical intake assessments, and prior authorization processes to ensure continuity for the most appropriate level of care for patients. The role includes performing assessments, screening for clinical and medical appropriateness, and communicating this information to a physician who makes the appropriate level of care decision. The Intake Clinician works closely with the business office, nursing, and clinical staff, as well as external parties, to ensure timely admission of patients.
Roles and Responsibilities
Facilitate intake, admission, and prior authorization process for incoming patients.
Perform insurance benefit verifications and disseminate the information to patients, their families, and appropriate internal staff.
Provide accurate and ongoing assessment of patients’ status during the admission and prior authorization process.
Facilitate the response to requests for services, including the initial response, assessment and referral process, designation of appropriate level of care, initiation/intake into services, and appropriate follow-up activity.
Follow EMTALA regulations to complete insurance verification and precertification when appropriate.
Respond to inquiries about the facility within policy timeframes.
Schedule and complete pre-admission assessments and communicate recommendations to patient or family.
Collaborate with other facility medical and psychiatric personnel to ensure appropriate recommendations and admissions.
Perform ongoing assessments of physical, functional, emotional, social, spiritual, and financial needs of patients and implement crisis intervention and referral.
Provide education about healthcare and social resource systems to empower patients and families to access resources independently.
Maintain all documentation involved in the admissions process.
Education, Experience, and Skill Requirements
Master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, mental health, or a related field from an accredited institution (or appropriate RN equivalent).
One or more years of experience in mental/behavioral health working with individuals in a clinical or observational capacity.
Experience in managed care pre-certification processes, level of care assessments, and utilization management preferred.
Experience in clinical interviewing, patient assessment, referral, treatment planning, and communication with external review organizations.
Outstanding interpersonal, interviewing, and assessment skills, including telephone etiquette.
Licenses, Designations, and Certifications
Current licensure as required for the area of clinical specialty (e.g., RN license, CAC, or other clinical counseling or therapy license).
CPR and de-escalation/restraint certification (training provided upon hire).
First aid certification if required by state or facility.
Supervisory Requirements This position is an Individual Contributor.
