Join to apply for the
Staff RF Desense Engineer
role at
General Motors
Job Overview We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated senior-level engineer to design, implement, and validate RF desense solutions in complex automotive systems. The role spans infotainment, ADAS, telematics, and wireless communication systems, collaborating across disciplines to troubleshoot interference, drive innovation, and mentor engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Develop innovative RF desense solutions (hardware and software) to ensure robust system performance.
Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and software teams to integrate RF systems into vehicles and meet performance standards.
Conduct rigorous lab and OTA testing; perform sensitivity and coexistence testing (LTE, 5G, Wi‑Fi, GNSS, Bluetooth, etc.) and validate against industry standards.
Characterize desense from internal aggressors (CPU, memory, power converters, displays) and external interferers; trace root causes using probes, shielding, grounding checks, and layout reviews.
Work with PCB designers to minimize desense risk in layout via signal integrity, noise coupling, return path, and RF grounding.
Propose and validate hardware fixes (shielding, filtering, isolation, grounding, decoupling, antenna optimization) and firmware/software fixes (dynamic clock control, scheduling, frequency hopping).
Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and best‑practice guidance on RF design and debugging processes.
Prepare technical documentation, test reports, and design guidelines; maintain case studies of desense issues and solutions.
Partner with suppliers, vendors, validation teams, and certification bodies (FCC, CE, carriers) to ensure regulatory compliance.
Stay current with RF technologies, simulation tools, and standards to continuously improve system performance.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (PhD preferred).
8+ years of RF engineering experience, with 3+ years focused on desense mitigation in automotive, aerospace/defense, or wireless communications.
Technical Expertise
Deep understanding of RF fundamentals, interference mechanisms, and mitigation techniques.
Proficiency with RF simulation/design tools (CST Microwave Studio, Keysight ADS, Microwave Office).
Hands‑on use of RF test equipment (Keysight UXM, R&S CMX, Anritsu MT8000A, CMW500, power meters, near‑field probes, spectrum/network analyzers, signal generators, OTA chambers).
Knowledge of EMC testing, antenna design, noise mitigation, and RF emissions standards.
Experience with statistical analysis tools such as MATLAB, Minitab, and Microsoft Excel.
Additional Skills
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills in high‑paced environments.
Excellent communication skills for collaboration and technical presentations.
Leadership abilities in mentoring, conflict resolution, and cross‑team coordination.
Adaptability, creativity, and organizational excellence.
Preferred Industry Experience
RF desense mitigation in infotainment, ADAS, and telematics.
RF optimization in consumer devices and wireless networks.
Example Day‑to‑Day Activities
Run Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth coexistence test cases and analyze throughput loss.
Measure LTE sensitivity with CPU on/off to assess clock interference.
Collaborate with PCB layout teams to improve RF isolation.
Recommend filter redesigns when harmonics overlap GNSS bands.
Validate fixes with regression testing before production release.
Compensation The compensation information is a good faith estimate based on applicable state laws. The expected base compensation for this role is: $164,300 - $252,600. Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
Bonus Potential An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
