Job mission Manage controls of customized vacuum driven robotic gripping equipment detailed to fit customer specified systems. Joulin tools are designed to be durable, efficient, and handle a diverse array of products. As a manufacturing facility, a Controls Engineer at Joulin should also work with customers to understand their needs. This means members of the Wood Industry Team must learn both the capabilities and limitations of the equipment and their operators. This position will provide field service/support remotely and at times on‑site. This is both a customer facing and operational support role.

Key responsibilities
Design and Development : Create control systems using hardware (like PLCs, sensors, actuators) and software (such as ladder logic, HMI/SCADA programming) to automate machinery and processes.
System Integration : Integrate control systems with existing equipment and ensure seamless operation between various components and systems.
Programming : Write, test, and debug programs for programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), and other automation equipment.
Troubleshooting : Diagnose and resolve issues with control systems, including hardware malfunctions and software bugs.
Documentation : Prepare and maintain detailed documentation for control systems, including wiring diagrams, control schematics, and user manuals.
Testing and Commissioning : Oversee the installation, testing, and commissioning of control systems to ensure they meet design specifications and safety standards.
Continuous Improvement : Analyze system performance and implement improvements to increase efficiency, reliability, and safety. Evaluate new products and develop specifications and standards for use in automated equipment.
Training : This role requires proactive, continuous learning to implement, and optimize automation systems including electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, software (ie..PLC Programming and HMI/SCADA Software, Robotic Control and Simulation) and vacuum technology.
Collaboration : Controls Engineer will work closely with the other members of the Wood Sales and Operations Team and other departments central to the company as well as customers. This role will have a strong influence on customer satisfaction and support.
Compliance : Ensure all control systems comply with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and company policies.
Key interfaces Controls Engineer reports to Alan Proffit and is part of the Wood Industry Robotic Gripping Team. Work closely with other engineers, technicians, production staff, and customers to understand requirements and deliver effective automation solutions.
Skills and abilities
Hands‑on experience working with advanced machinery and various PLC logic
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to create wiring diagrams
Networking experience
Concise documentation and writing skills
Experience in BOM creation and management
Knowledge in development of controls
Analysis and Judgment – Quickly understand and analyze complex issues and problems; comes up with sound and rational judgments
Constructive Teamwork – Co‑operates well with others; shares knowledge, experience, and information to support and strengthen others on the team

Experience and educational background
Bachelors (preferred) in Mechanical, Electrical, or similar concentration of Engineering
Electronics background
Work Environment and Physical Demands
The Joulin Controls Engineer position is in a mix of office, manufacturing, field environments, close collaboration with manufacturing and involvement in final product testing prior to shipment are critical.
Travel
Travel is required; estimate is 1‑2 weeks per month.
Remote Work
No. Work will be performed at Hickory, NC office or customer locations.
