Job Overview The Engineering Technician is responsible for maintaining and repairing engines and equipment onboard vessels and barges to ensure they are fit for service. This includes performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and conducting repairs on mechanical and electrical systems.

Major Responsibilities

Perform preventive and routine maintenance on towboats and barge machinery/equipment ranging from oil changes to full engine overhauls.

Troubleshoot and repair mechanical issues on-site.

Provide electrical system repairs onboard vessels.

Execute non-routine maintenance onboard boats and barges as needed.

Work an on‑call schedule including nights and weekends.

May involve travel to multiple locations.

Perform other duties as required and directed by management.

Critical Thinking Skills: Ability to analyze complex mechanical and electrical issues, and make sound, timely decisions to maintain or restore vessel functionality.

Organizational Relationship This position reports to and is appointed by the Senior Port Engineer.

Experience and Education

High School Diploma required. An associate or bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent work experience.

Possess a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

Hold a valid Driver’s License.

Minimum 5 years of experience in repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting machinery and equipment in the marine industry.

Must have towboat repair experience.

Knowledge of the following engines preferred: Caterpillar 3512B, Cummins, K19, K38, QSK50, QSK19.

Strong knowledge of marine electrical systems and diagnostic procedures.

Familiarity with applicable code of federal regulations.

Physical Requirements

Ability to climb ladders and stairs.

Ability for repetitive bending and stooping, lifting heavy marine equipment.

Ability to lift & carry up to 75 pounds.

Ability to work outdoors in all elements during all seasons.

Capable use of safety gear including hard hats, safety goggles, hearing protection, and steel toe boots.

Outcomes The Engineering Technician is expected to deliver high‑quality, reliable maintenance and repair work that ensures operational readiness of company assets. The role supports the Senior Port Engineer by executing responsibilities diligently, exhibiting trust, and contributing to a professional environment consistent with IMT and CBC’s culture and values.
