Overview
The Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer serves as the technical authority for process control, automation, and instrumentation systems across multiple production sites. This role combines deep technical expertise with hands‑on problem‑solving to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable plant operations. The engineer will lead control system strategy, support ongoing operations, and play a key role in capital projects from concept through commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the subject matter expert for distributed control (DCS), safety instrumented (SIS), and operational technology (OT) systems.
Lead performance optimization and reliability initiatives for instrumentation and control assets.
Integrate hardware, software, and network systems to enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency.
Program, troubleshoot, and maintain PLCs, HMIs, and other automation platforms.
Develop and maintain process control documentation, including narratives, I/O lists, and P&IDs.
Provide direct support for production troubleshooting, loop tuning, and data analysis.
Oversee I/O checkout, wiring verification, and system testing during project commissioning.
Prepare and review SIS documentation (SRS, C&E, test plans, drawings) and support functional safety assessments in alignment with ISA 84 standards.
Participate in process safety management (PSM) activities such as MOC reviews, HAZOPs, LOPAs, and alarm rationalization.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on design, implementation, and continuous improvement projects.
Develop and implement strategies that maximize equipment uptime and optimize lifecycle costs.
Provide training and mentorship to engineering and maintenance personnel.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Chemical Engineering (or equivalent).
10+ years of controls and instrumentation experience within the refining, petrochemical, or process manufacturing industries.
Strong background in automation design, programming, and system startup.
Proficiency with Allen‑Bradley Logix PLCs, Studio 5000, and AVEVA System Platform.
Experience with HMI/SCADA systems (FactoryTalk View SE), historians, and PI data systems.
Knowledge of process control networks, communication protocols, and cybersecurity fundamentals.
Experience with safety instrumented systems and alarm management.
Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
Strong organizational ability and commitment to technical excellence and safety.
Preferred Experience
Familiarity with fieldbus and communication protocols (Modbus, Foundation Fieldbus, HART, Ethernet/IP).
Experience with OSIsoft PI Historian and PI Vision.
Knowledge of Schneider motor control software (SoMove, Easergy).
Exposure to Rockwell PlantPAx system architecture and coding standards.
