Position:
Coffee Shop Department Manager (FLSA: Non‑Exempt)
Responsibilities
Maintain a positive attitude; create an atmosphere of friendliness and fun through flexibility and teamwork.
Generate a friendly atmosphere by encouraging employees to greet and speak to customers; provide prompt, courteous, and efficient service.
Set the department standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance and overall profitability.
Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store.
Make an effort to learn customers’ names and address them by name whenever possible.
Assists customers by:
Escorting them to the products they’re looking for
Securing products that are out of reach
Loading or unloading heavy items
Making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests
Performing other tasks to enhance the shopping experience
Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call, including taking product orders.
Recruit, hire, train, supervise, discipline, and evaluate all department employees.
Determine department goals with store director.
Determine weekly work schedule and establish a daily work plan for the department.
Inspect signage and displays for quality and quantity of merchandise and order product for replenishment.
Handle and satisfy customer issues.
Communicate with employees regarding sales and ideas.
Figure retail pricing and ensure correct pricing.
Extend invoices, post invoices, and oversee department bookkeeping procedures.
Analyze weekly and monthly sales and trends, compare to actuals, prepare ad projections, and write ads.
Conduct inventory of the department.
Plan displays, promotions, and determine pre‑orders.
Ensure proper temperatures and storage procedures to guarantee freshness and control shrink of product.
Understand and troubleshoot equipment and ensure maintenance is performed.
Maintain store appearance and equipment in a consistent manner.
Complete and implement the Advanced Store Training program.
Maintain consistent speed of service by ensuring all store‑staffing requirements are met.
Maintain strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress.
Adhere to company policies and individual store guidelines.
Report to work on time and as scheduled.
Secondary Duties
Ensure pricing is competitive in the market area.
Attend meetings, seminars and participate in continuing education.
Fill displays and work in the sales area.
Unload trucks, check in delivered merchandise and place product in appropriate storage area.
Perform departmental duties as needed.
Assist in other areas of store as needed.
Perform other job‑related duties and special projects as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics
Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization and interpret instructions.
Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Ability to compose original correspondence, interview job applicants, and follow technical manuals.
Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent with at least one year of related work experience.
Physical Requirements
Exert up to 100 pounds occasionally; up to 50 pounds frequently; up to 10 pounds constantly.
Visual requirements include vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
Perform activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Working Conditions This position is frequently exposed to temperature extremes and dampness, has potential equipment movement hazards from pallet jacks, electrical shock, and exposure to cleaning chemicals and solvents. It is a fast‑paced retail environment.
Equipment Used Standard equipment in a coffee shop: cash register, can opener, thermometers, knives, dishwasher, ice machine, scales, pop machine, calculator, computer, thermometer, steamer, fax, copier, telephone.
