Industrial Wastewater Operator and Hazardous Waste Management Specialist

Reports to: EH & S Manager

Location: Seattle, WA

Job Type: Full‑Time, Non‑Exempt

Schedule: Monday‑Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

Key Responsibilities

Operate, monitor, and maintain the industrial wastewater treatment system, including chemical feed systems, pumps, filter presses, and sampling equipment.

Perform daily process control tests, record operational data, and adjust processes to optimize performance.

Troubleshoot and resolve equipment or process issues to minimize downtime.

Ensure discharge effluent meets all regulatory and permit limits.

Maintain and calibrate instrumentation and control systems.

Conduct preventive maintenance and coordinate repairs with maintenance personnel.

Hazardous Waste Management

Identify, label, store, and document all hazardous waste streams per RCRA and facility SOPs.

Maintain hazardous waste satellite accumulation areas and central storage in compliance.

Coordinate hazardous waste shipments, manifesting, and work with approved disposal vendors.

Conduct weekly inspections of hazardous waste storage areas and spill response kits.

Develop and maintain waste profiles, SDS documentation, and regulatory logs.

Compliance & Documentation

Prepare and submit required environmental reports (DMRs, manifests, spill logs, inspection checklists).

Assist with environmental audits and inspections by regulatory agencies or internal EHS teams.

Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations.

Participate in spill response, emergency preparedness, and safety drills.

Training & Safety

Train personnel on proper handling of hazardous materials and environmental best practices.

Promote a strong safety culture and actively participate in safety committees or meetings.

Ensure all PPE and safety procedures are followed during operations.

Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree or technical certification in environmental science, wastewater technology, chemistry, or related field preferred.

Experience:

2+ years in industrial wastewater treatment and hazardous waste management. Experience with chemical treatment systems and RCRA regulations strongly preferred.

Skills & Competencies:

Strong understanding of wastewater treatment processes and hazardous waste regulations; ability to read SDSs, technical manuals, and regulatory documents; excellent record‑keeping; strong troubleshooting and mechanical skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic data entry; ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment.

Working Conditions:

Indoor and outdoor industrial settings; exposure to chemicals, odors, confined spaces, hazardous materials; must wear PPE including respirators; able to lift up to 50 lbs; physically demanding.

Compensation:

$20.76 – $26.00 DOE

Work Environment Temperatures can fluctuate based on outdoor weather. PPE such as safety glasses, goggles, aprons, rubber boots, gloves, and respirators may be required (provided by the company).
