Sr. Software Development Engineer, Annapurna Labs, Machine Learning Acceleration - Power and Performance
AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product Annapurna Labs (our organization within AWS UC) designs silicon and software that accelerates innovation. Customers choose us to create cloud solutions that solve challenges that were unimaginable a short time ago—even yesterday. Our custom chips, accelerators, and software stacks enable us to take on technical challenges that have never been seen before, and deliver results that help our customers change the world.
We are seeking a Software Development Engineer to join our Power Architecture team, developing next‑generation ML Acceleration Chips. In this role, you will focus on developing and implementing software algorithms that manage power, thermals, and performance across the chip, as well as the server system. Additionally, you will build tracing tools to capture power/performance metrics and create automated workflows to optimize training and inference workloads.
Key job responsibilities
Develop and implement software and firmware for managing power, thermal, and performance behavior.
Translate architectural specifications and models into working, tested code.
Participate in design, implementation, and validation of control algorithms across chip, card, and server scope.
Collaborate with power architects and other system teams to ensure smooth software‑hardware integration.
Own code quality through testing, debugging, and continuous integration practices.
Develop and automate tools and frameworks for running training and inference workloads, as well as collecting power and performance metrics.
A day in the life You will work closely with power architects who define the power architecture and control schemes — you will help translate those into efficient, reliable, and maintainable software.
About the team Our team is dedicated to supporting new members. We have a broad mix of experience levels and tenures, and we’re building an environment that celebrates knowledge‑sharing and mentorship. Senior members enjoy one‑on‑one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews. We care about your career growth and strive to assign projects that help our team members develop your engineering expertise so you feel empowered to take on more complex tasks in the future.
Diverse Experiences AWS values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply. If your career is just starting, hasn’t followed a traditional path, or includes alternative experiences, don’t let it stop you from applying.
Basic Qualifications
5+ years of non‑internship professional software development experience.
Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a related field.
Strong software development skills, with experience across the full software development lifecycle.
Proficiency in C/C++ and scripting languages (e.g., Python).
Experience in writing production‑quality code and working in collaborative, cross‑functional teams.
Strong debugging and problem‑solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) and related workloads.
Exposure to system software development (e.g., kernel drivers, firmware interaction, embedded systems).
Familiarity with hardware/software interactions or hardware‑aware programming.
Experience with thermal, power, or performance management.
Takes strong ownership, works effectively in ambiguous situations, demonstrates a bias for action while consistently delivering impactful results.
Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.
This position will remain posted until filled. Applicants should apply via our internal or external career site.
