General Overview Under the direction of the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Director of Operations, this role supervises Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants) within the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery division. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the position provides comprehensive clinical care in cardiac and thoracic surgery, inpatient and outpatient settings, and participates in research and quality assurance initiatives.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Oversee APPs in daily operations, including outpatient clinic care coordination.
Provide inpatient floor coverage and OR staffing support for Cardiac and Thoracic APPs assisting during surgical procedures.
Ensure adherence to ethics and quality standards in patient care delivered by Advanced Practice Providers.
Collaborate with senior management on operational and performance issues and develop new plans to improve and integrate APP functions across specialties and throughout the medical center, including implementation of APP Best Practice Models.
Ensure professional development opportunities for the APP team.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
NP: Current California RN license, Nurse Practitioner license, and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification.
PA: Current California Physician Assistant license and PA certification from NCCPA.
BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to obtain ART within six (6) months of hire.
Minimum 3 years of recent work experience as a licensed NP or PA in a surgical or procedural setting.
Demonstrated ability to supervise a team and manage complex workflow and competing priorities.
Strong knowledge of clinical and operational issues for APPs, including quality improvement, ethics, and staff education.
Proficiency in human resources management policies and performance evaluation.
Excellent analytical, critical thinking, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Proficiency with clinical and administrative software and data management systems used by APPs.
Comprehensive medical knowledge in relevant specialties and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery or related surgical specialty.
Experience within UC San Diego Health or comparable academic health system.
Prior leadership or supervisory experience within an Advanced Practice Provider or clinical team.
Involvement or demonstrated ability to recruit and hire APPs.
Special Conditions
Subject to criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
Requires flexible, variable hours with ability to change schedule on short notice.
May require occasional evening and weekend hours beyond normal workday.
Must obtain and maintain UCSD Medical Staff privileges during employment.
Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $149,700 – $297,700 (prorated if appointment percentage below 100%).
