Key Responsibilities
Reimagine auction mechanisms to holistically optimize business drivers, shopper needs, and ad placement across non-search pages. Develop new auction functions through offline simulation and online testing that consider ad relevance, ad revenue, and advertiser demand, while remaining sensitive to seasonality and bespoke shopping experiences.
Advocate for advanced scientific and technical rigor—identify and implement best-in-class algorithms, methodologies, and infrastructure that enable rapid experimentation and scaling.
Set a long-term vision for continued scientific innovation and establish strategic goals to future‑proof the organization’s technical stacks and ML/LLM frameworks for new and emerging business objectives.
Mentor and guide junior scientists and engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous learning to enhance the organization’s ability to solve complex advertising science problems.
Directly impact key business metrics by improving ad relevance and auction efficiency, contributing to revenue growth, customer satisfaction, and differentiated shopper experiences.
Qualifications
5+ years of hands‑on work in predictive modeling and analysis.
PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or a related language.
10+ years of relevant work in industry or academia.
Strong knowledge of problem solving, algorithm design, and complexity analysis.
Proven ability to create novel algorithms and advance the state of the art.
Peer‑reviewed scientific contributions in premier journals and conferences.
Experience distilling informal customer requirements into problem definitions, dealing with ambiguity and competing objectives.
Track record of developing junior members from academia or industry into a business career path.
About the Team The Off‑Search team within Sponsored Products and Brands (SPB) is focused on building delightful ad experiences across various surfaces beyond Search on Amazon—such as product detail pages, the homepage, and store‑in‑store pages—to drive monetization. Our vision is to deliver highly personalized, context‑aware advertising that adapts to individual shopper preferences, scales across diverse page types, remains relevant to seasonal and event‑driven moments, and integrates seamlessly with organic recommendations such as new arrivals, basket‑building content, and fast‑delivery options. To execute this vision, we work in close partnership with Amazon Stores stakeholders to lead the expansion and growth of advertising across Amazon‑owned and‑operated pages beyond Search. We operate full stack—from backend ad‑retail edge services, ad retrieval, and ad auctions to shopper‑facing experiences—all designed to deliver meaningful value.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $179,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Depending on the position offered, equity, sign‑on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
