Job Summary Consistently and safely operate locomotives and trains in compliance with federal regulations and corporate policies. Operate equipment during varying work hours within a 24/7 transportation environment maintaining alertness, situational awareness, and vigilance. Think independently and communicate effectively with crew members and other personnel responsible for safe and efficient train movement.
Minimum Qualifications
H.S. Diploma or GED Required.
Some work experience demonstrating alertness, awareness, vigilance, and effective verbal communication in a work environment. Satisfactory attendance and safe work record.
Prior railroad operating experience and a work history that demonstrates the ability to adapt to variable and changing work hours (preferred).
Driver’s license: If applicable, provide a certified copy of a valid motor vehicle driving record from the chief of the state licensing agency issued within the last 60 months. The record must be void of any drug and alcohol violations within the previous 36 months.
Upon selection, successful completion of Engineer Training: 8–10 weeks of classroom and field work at Amtrak’s Training Center in Wilmington, DE, followed by extensive on‑job training at the crew base. Paid at a student training rate until certification as a Class 1 Train Service Engineer.
Incumbents are subject to periodic medical examinations, including random drug and alcohol screenings, and must meet the Federal Railroad Administration vision, color vision, and hearing criteria.
Preferred Qualifications
Some college or vocational training.
Required Skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills, situational awareness, and the ability to work independently in a high‑risk, safety‑critical environment.
Compensation & Benefits The hourly rate is
$34.42 – $34.42 .
