Johnson VA Medical Center is located in Clarksburg, West Virginia and serves a veteran population of approximately 70,000 in north‑central West Virginia and adjacent counties in Maryland, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs in the year the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory or Commonwealth, or in the District of Columbia.

Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

Directors may be required to be board‑certified for faculty status.

Qualified residency programs include (1) those approved by ACGME, (2) those approved by AOA, or (3) other residency programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified U.S. practice deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.

Residents in ACGME/AOA‑accredited programs who meet basic requirements are eligible for appointment as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).

PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.

PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they will have a scope of practice that allows restricted duties under supervision.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred experience: 2–3 years of primary‑care clinical experience.

Physical requirements include lifting up to 35 pounds, moderate carrying (15–35 pounds), lifting with assistive devices, pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulders, walking, standing, kneeling, and repeated bending, all intermittently.

Duties

Provide medical services to Veterans (mostly male) on an outpatient basis in the primary‑care setting.

Manage disease processes such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, mental‑health disorders, with a major focus on preventive medicine.

Lead the Patient‑Aligned Care Team (PACT) approach to care delivery—a team‑based model.

Document all medical information in an electronic medical record.

Perform medication reconciliation.

Deliver outpatient care while meeting and exceeding compliance standards.

Maintain current clinical privileges, licensure, ACLS, BLS, and all other required certifications.

Participate in quality‑of‑care and peer‑review activities and performance‑improvement initiatives as directed by the Chief of Medical Service.

All other duties assigned by VA.

Benefits and Compensation

Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases.

Paid Time Off: 50–55 days of PTO per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and possible 5 days paid absence for CME).

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(K) with up to 5% contributions by VA.

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).

Licensure: one full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory.

CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full‑time with board certification).

Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.

Contract: No physician employment contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.

Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

Physician/Provider Contract Buy‑Out Program (CBOP) eligibility for certain rural or highly rural facilities for a minimum of 4 years.

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) eligibility: up to $200,000, period 1–5 years, determined by VHA Office after application review.
