What You Will Do: GFT is seeking a Bridge Engineer/Inspector to join our Practice or CBG Team in Chicago, IL. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at our Chicago office.

Working on the Transportation team at GFT offers the opportunity to engage in transformative projects that enhance transportation infrastructure and improve community connectivity. You will have the opportunity to work on complex rail projects for Class I railroads, short lines and transit agencies, similar to the CREATE P1 Englewood Flyover and the UPRR Relocation at O'Hare, award‑winning projects completed by GFT in Chicago.

What You'll Be Challenged to Do: This position is open to engineers with 4 to 10 years of experience and includes inspection of bridges along with opportunity for the preparation of load ratings, structural design, rehabilitation, construction documents, specifications, and estimates. Day‑to‑day assignments and technical guidance will be provided by current staff Project Managers. Assignments will involve travel within the continental United States. TranSystems has a National Bridge Inspection Practice, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work at the national level for agencies in a wide range of states.

Responsibilities:

Perform bridge inspection assignments on complex and signature structures as well as simple structures, documenting clear and detailed inspection findings.

Prepare concise structural inspection evaluation reports.

Assist with the planning and preparation of field inspections, business proposals, cost proposals, and safety plans.

Perform load rating analyses.

Assist in analyzing information and data to perform inspection/design tasks.

Receive instructions from Project Manager or Senior Project Engineers regarding expected results.

Ensure accuracy of engineering design, reports, load ratings, and plans, maintaining quality, thoroughness, and adherence to budgets, schedules, and company standards.

Research design options and document findings for the Senior Project Engineer.

Stay informed with code requirements, state inspection manuals, and relevant resources.

Keep Senior Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project schedule or scope or additional services.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in civil and/or structural engineering with an emphasis in structures from an ABET‑accredited university or college.

Registered Professional Engineer in Illinois or possession of an NCEES record.

Experience reading plans and shop drawings.

Team‑oriented engineer with strong communication skills.

Working knowledge of MS Office Suite and experience with engineering design packages such as AutoCAD (desirable), MicroStation (required), AASHTO BrR, Staad.Pro, MathCAD, LUSAS, and/or other structural analysis software systems.

Willingness to travel within the continental United States.

Physically capable of field work, including working at heights, carrying ladders and gear, and working in adverse weather conditions.

Experience operating bucket trucks, manlifts, and under‑bridge inspection vehicles.

Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

Rope access experience or interest in learning rope access techniques (SPRAT, IRATA).

Advanced experience with Microsoft Excel, including basic programming ability.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and technical writing.

Completion of NHI Safety Inspection of In‑Service Bridges (FHWA‑NHI‑130055) and NHI Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges (FHWA‑NHI‑130078).

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $100,000 - $132,000, dependent on experience and geographic location.
