Position Summary The School Nurse provides health services and support to students enrolled in the special education program. This position plays a key role in ensuring the health, safety, and well‑being of students with complex medical, developmental, and behavioral needs. The nurse collaborates with teachers, therapists, and families to promote a safe, inclusive, and healthy learning environment aligned with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Key Responsibilities Health Services & Direct Care
Provide daily nursing care, including medication administration, tube feedings, catheterization, seizure management, diabetic care, and other prescribed medical procedures.
Monitor students for signs of illness or injury; respond promptly to health emergencies and behavioral crises.
Maintain accurate and confidential health records in compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and RIDE regulations.
Implement physician orders and coordinate with outside healthcare providers as needed.
Health Education & Collaboration
Collaborate with teachers, therapists (OT, PT, SLP), and classroom staff to integrate health and safety plans into daily routines.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to IEPs and 504 plans related to student health needs.
Educate students and staff on health, hygiene, and wellness topics appropriate to developmental levels.
Communicate effectively with families to discuss care plans, medical updates, and promote continuity of care between home and school.
Compliance & Documentation
Maintain up-to-date health records, immunization reports, and medication administration logs.
Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including those from RIDE, BHDDH, and DOH.
Support annual screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis) and document findings according to school and state protocols.
Participate in emergency preparedness, infection control, and safety procedures.
Qualifications
Licensure:
Current RN license in the State of Rhode Island
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in pediatrics, school nursing, or special education settings.
Skills:
Strong communication and organizational skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, team-based environment.
Compassionate and patient-centered approach to care.
Familiarity with developmental disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, seizure management, and behavioral health needs.
