General Description PREP Research Associate – Development of Viral/Microbial Reference Materials. This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program, which fosters collaboration between NIST and academic institutions on scientific research.

Research Title Staff Scientist

The Work Will Entail Serve as the lead virologist for the NIST microbiology program. This full‑time laboratory role supports the development of viral and microbial standards and collaborates with the microbial genomics team to characterize and produce reference materials.

Key Responsibilities Will Include (but are not limited to)

Lead the NIST virology laboratory program, managing a portfolio of diverse viruses (up to BSL‑2) to meet stakeholder needs.

Perform viral and eukaryotic cell culture, plaque assays, optimization, and protocol development for viral culture.

Consult and collaborate with stakeholders in the microbiome and pathogen detection communities.

Maintain accurate and organized electronic records.

Prepare reports, manuscripts, and oral presentations of research findings.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in virology, microbiology, or a related field (or close to completion).

Strong oral and written communication skills.

At least 2 years of relevant laboratory experience.

Experience measuring cytopathic effect using plaque assays.

Experience developing viral infectivity assays.

Experience measuring infectivity of non‑cytopathic viruses.
