SUMMARY

Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned unit. Takes samples from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, vision, values, with consideration of the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs functions associated with the computer system to assure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens.
  • Registers patients, verifies identification, enters demographics, insurance information, ordering provider, diagnostic codes, and orders tests per established policies.
  • Manages Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) including supporting diagnostic codes, document review, patient signature, and scanning.
  • Performs clerical activities such as medical necessity follow‑up, sorting and filing records, answering phones, and service checklists.
  • Maintains and monitors standing orders for expiration and renewals.
  • Provides patients with forms and instructions for specimen collection and pre‑collection preparation.
  • Schedules venipunctures or capillary punctures according to priority and test type, including timed studies.
  • Uses computer‑generated collection labels and follows the Pathology Handbook for specimen collection and special collection requirements.
  • Verifies patient identity and ensures proper preparation prior to venipuncture (e.g., fasting).
  • Obtains blood samples using venipuncture or capillary puncture technique, alerting nursing staff or supervisor to any deviations or adverse conditions.
  • Processes other specimen types (e.g., throat culture) and performs sample processing such as centrifugation and specimen tracking.
  • Obtains specialized test samples (e.g., thyroid releasing hormone) and verifies volume and timing of dosage.
  • Labels, wraps, and transports samples according to type and urgency, and maintains records of sample procurement.
  • Performs duties in accordance with hospital policy and universal precautions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Phlebotomy certificate through National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences or completion of a phlebotomy certificate program with formal internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures. In lieu of internship, 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered. In lieu of phlebotomy certification, 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants.
  • Interpersonal skills to obtain and provide patient information and explain procedures, allaying fears and anxiety.
  • Knowledge and skills to provide care considering aging processes, developmental stages, and cultural patterns.
  • Clerical skills to prepare and maintain records and reports, including keyboard competency.
  • Familiarity with blood collector equipment, anticoagulants, and special precautions.
  • Ability to distinguish chromatographic colors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • In‑patient care environment with considerable walking between units and physical effort required to manage uncooperative patients.
  • Exposure to odors from specimens and communicable diseases; adherence to infection control procedures minimizes injury risk.
  • Manual dexterity required for venipuncture; ability to perform with precision.

  • Pay Range: $17.69 – $27.90 per hour
  • Work Type: Saturday only
  • Shift: Weekend 7 am – 12 pm (4 hours)
  • Driving Required: No
