The Single-Family Real Estate Department in the Legal Division of Freddie Mac is seeking a seasoned attorney to join its legal staff. The attorney will provide legal advice to internal clients on a broad range of legal matters related to Freddie Mac as a business entity and will also manage outside counsel. The attorney will primarily support the single-family capital markets, single-family counterparty credit risk management and single-family mortgage servicing performance business areas with an emphasis on sophisticated financial transactions.

Your Impact:

Our team supports the Single-Family Division’s business to negotiate and document transactions including non-bank servicer financing facilities, servicing transfers as well as other related duties. This team is part of the Single-Family Real Estate Department in the company’s Legal Division, providing all-around legal support and advice to the Single-Family Business areas of the company, covering all aspects of residential mortgage underwriting, purchase, delivery, servicing, disposition, and risk mitigation.

Represent Freddie Mac in transactions relating to financings secured by servicing contract rights and advance reimbursement rights, including review and revision of loan documents, drafting, negotiating and closing acknowledgment agreements, consent agreements, collateral pledge agreements and parental guaranties, working closely with deal managers to advise them on structures and risks, and coordinating outside counsel;

Understand intercreditor agreements, participations and loan syndications, including familiarity with lien perfection, bankruptcy and insolvency considerations;

Negotiate and document transactions relating to the purchase and sale of residential mortgage loan portfolios and of mortgage loan servicing;

Understand Freddie Mac’s Single-Family Seller/Servicer Guide and how it impacts the complex relationships with our business customers;

Be a risk manager at all times; advising clients on legal and business risks while arming them with the information necessary to make informed decisions.

Understand Freddie Mac’s Single-Family Seller/Servicer Guide (including knowledge of representations, warranties, covenants and legal remedies).

Develop and deliver strategic solutions to nuanced legal and business issues based on your in-depth knowledge of the company and the regulatory and business environments in which it operates.

Liaise with our Litigation group related to distressed counterparties including resolution and settlement agreements, creditor-side bankruptcies and review and analysis of financial and transactional information, litigation planning and client counseling.

Be a critical team member and colleague, influencing cohesion, inclusiveness and cooperative involvement by the entire team.

Mentor and train junior level attorneys.

Qualifications:

10 or more years of relevant sophisticated legal experience, either in‑house with Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae, a bank, mortgage company, or law firm.

Juris Doctor (JD) degree and member in good standing of a state bar association.

Excellent analytical, strategic, legal research, writing and advocacy skills.

Proven ability to work effectively in a team while achieving personal and organizational goals.

Proactive, flexible, creative, and act with an appropriate degree of urgency in every situation.

Subject matter expertise in asset‑backed finance, mortgage loan servicing and insolvency preparedness.

This position has an annualized market-based salary range of $224,000 - $336,000 and is eligible to participate in the annual incentive program. The final salary offered will generally fall within this range and is dependent on various factors including but not limited to the responsibilities of the position, experience, skill set, internal pay equity and other relevant qualifications of the applicant.
