Jon Summary/Description
Under general supervision of the Director of Athletics and the Director of Athletic Communications, this position assists in developing, coordinating, and implementing a comprehensive communications program that effectively promotes ASUAthletics and its programs.
Typical Duties / Job Duties
PromotesASUathletics programs
– including student-athletes, coaches, and teams—through diverse media, advertising, promotional, public relations, and marketing strategies. Assists in maintaining and updating the angelosports.com website with timely and accurate content such as game recaps, features, announcements, and news releases.
Compiles and maintains statistical and historical data
on individual athletes and teams; prepares reports and submissions for the NCAA and Lone Star Conference (LSC). Oversees sports media relations strategies and provides direction to the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications as well as graduate and student assistants.
Fosters positive relationships with media
by coordinating coverage and appearances for coaches and student-athletes with local, state, and national news outlets.
Assists with game-day operations and management , including event setup, statistical reporting to meet NCAA and LSC requirements, and coordination of press box and media area activities.
Ensures compliance
with all NCAA, LSC, Angelo State University, and Texas Tech University System policies, rules, and regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of
Communications, journalism, and web, news, and feature writing principles.
Media relations, including print, broadcast, and web communication strategies.
Sports and athletic programs, including basic sports statistical applications.
Common marketing, advertising, and promotional principles and strategies.
Skill in
Adobe Creative Suite programs, including Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects, and Premiere Pro.
Writing, editing, and producing content for a variety of media platforms.
Serving as primary or secondary media contact for football.
Ability to
PromoteASUAthletics through multiple media, marketing, public relations, and promotional strategies.
Work effectively with a wide range of individuals, including media representatives, coaches, faculty, athletes, and staff.
Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Manage media staff and activities in compliance with university policies, procedures, and best practices.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degrees from a regionally accredited university or college in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, advertising, or a closely related field is required.
Three years of experience in sports information, communications, marketing, or public relations is required. Previous experience in sports marketing is a plus, though it is not required.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree from a regionally accredited university or college in a related field is preferred.
Five years of experience in sports information, communications, marketing, or public relations is preferred.
Physical Requirements This position requires prolonged periods of sitting, and intermittent standing, walking, reaching, bending and grasping. Basic manual dexterity and good hand‑eye coordination are also necessary. Incumbent works both in and outdoors, and has periodic exposure to dust, pollen, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
