The Potomac School Science Department seeks candidates for an Upper School Science Teacher opening for the 2025-2026 school year. This position, which may be part-time or full-time, reports to the Head of the Upper School and is responsible for a combination of the following responsibilities: teaching biology classes, including the possibility of advanced-level courses, and supervising independent research projects as part of the Science and Engineering Research Center, including helping students connect with internship opportunities and guiding them through the research and documentation process.
Duties and Responsibilities
Inspire a love of science in students through teaching four classes.
Build relationships with students via the classroom.
Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instruction in a manner that facilitates active, student-centered learning using various teaching methods such as discussions, group activities, and occasional lectures.
Work with students to encourage and facilitate each individual’s growth.
Collaborate actively with science department colleagues, including on curriculum and course planning.
Teach the assigned curriculum, evaluate students’ progress, and inform parents of progress.
Keep attendance records; manage student behavior in the classroom and maintain a positive educational environment for all students.
Meet with parents as needed to discuss student progress and challenges.
Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and other teacher training workshops.
Demonstrate personal leadership qualities to inspire student learning, including understanding of the characteristics of the age group taught.
Work in an organized, dependable, patient, and creative manner.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably with previous experience teaching biology at the Upper School level and ideally with previous scientific research experience.
Ability to communicate, motivate, and understand the students’ educational and emotional needs.
Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with other teachers, support staff, parents and members of the community.
Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and use different teaching methods that inspire high student achievement.
Enthusiasm and joy for working with students.
