Position Overview Lead Psychiatrist performs highly advanced psychiatric work under direct supervision of the State Hospital Medical Director, directing, overseeing, and administering psychiatric treatment to patients, and providing leadership to ensure optimal quality of psychiatric services.

Key Responsibilities

Direct, oversee, and conduct examinations and diagnoses of patients; administer psychiatric treatment and medications as needed.

Administer specialized psychiatric treatments and procedures.

Direct staff and provide leadership to ensure optimal quality psychiatric treatment services.

Monitor trends and activities, prepare reports, and make recommendations for operational and service improvement.

Lead the patient’s recovery team and provide guidance on patient treatment.

Plan, assign, and supervise the work of other psychiatrists and ancillary staff.

Participate in committees and performance improvement activities; contribute to guidelines and standards of care.

Maintain documentation consistent with The Joint Commission, CMS, and state regulations.

Essential Job Functions Attends work on a regular basis with specific shift schedules; may work rotating or overtime as required. Utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to complete psychiatric assessments and administer treatments in compliance with policies and regulations. Performs medication reviews, conducts clinics, develops recovery plans, collaborates across disciplines, and participates in quality improvement and audit activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of general medicine and general psychiatry practices.

Knowledge of person‑centered individualized care and recovery planning.

Knowledge of behavior treatment principles and collaborative teamwork.

Knowledge of state formulary guidelines for maximum doses.

Skill in providing inpatient psychiatric services, diagnostic tools, and equipment.

Skill in using electronic health record systems and Microsoft Office.

Ability to assess, diagnose, and supervise treatment while following local policies and laws.

Ability to direct psychiatric activities, develop policies, and prepare medical records.

Ability to solve complex medical issues, collaborate with the recovery team, and implement improvement plans.

Ability to manage polypharmacy and justify medication decisions.

Ability to work independently with good judgment and time management.

Ability to organize, present information, and maintain accurate documentation.

Licensing, Registrations, and Certifications

Licensed (unrestricted) medical doctor in Texas.

Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry.

Current DEA registration.

National Provider Identifier (NPI) required.

Initial Screening Criteria

Minimum of 4 years of experience as a psychiatrist.

Minimum of 4 years working with patients with psychiatric disorders.

Residency training required.
