TESTING FOR POLICE OFFICER
Starting Salary: $60,000
The Fredericksburg Police Department will administer the written and physical agility tests for the position of full-time police officer on the following date:
Saturday October 18th 2025 at 8:00am
Saturday November 8th 2025 at 8.00am
Saturday December 13th 2025 at 8.00am
Saturday January 10th 2026 at 8.00am
Sunday January 11th 2026 at 8.00am
Saturday February 21st 2026 at 8.00am
Saturday March 14th 2026 at 8.00am
You are not permitted to attend testing unless your registration is confirmed.
Register for testing by contacting Sgt. Shepherd and providing your name, address and telephone number.
If you are hired, you will attend the April 2026 or July 2026 Law Enforcement Basic class at the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy. Testing for candidates can also form an eligibility list for future vacancies.
Day of Testing
Be punctual.
You will not be accepted after the scheduled testing time. Testing will be held at the Fredericksburg Police Department, 2200 Cowan Boulevard, Fredericksburg, VA 22401.
Be prepared.
Review testing materials/videos on website. Bring your valid driver’s license. All other testing materials will be provided. Bring water and snacks.
Dress appropriately.
Arrive at the testing site in fitness attire and athletic shoes. Upon successful completion of the written test, you will immediately attempt the physical test. Please plan for at least two hours for written testing and four hours to complete the physical agility testing.
Unauthorized.
Backpacks, bags, cell phones, smart watches or other electronic devices that access the internet are not permitted. Leave these items in your vehicle.

Already a Virginia DCJS‑certified Law Enforcement Officer? Are you enrolled in the Pre‑Employment Program at RRCJA? Do you have a Bachelor’s Degree? Do you have military service? Contact Sergeant Shepherd directly on your next steps. These individuals are waived from the written portion of this testing.
The entire selection process includes: • Written exam; Physical agility and LawFit® testing; Verification of previous work performance and driving history; Polygraph examination; Psychological examination; Background investigation; Police Ride‑Along; Senior Panel oral review board; Interview with the Chief of Police; Medical exam.
The LawFit® fitness test includes: • One repetition of maximum weight bench press; One minute maximum sit‑ups; Sit & Reach; Maximum pull‑ups (pull‑downs are not permitted) to exhaustion; Maximum push‑ups to exhaustion; 1.5 mile run; Obstacle course in 1 minutes 36 seconds or less (video here). You must achieve a minimum score of 169 points. For information regarding LawFit® scoring click here.
Practice LawFit® Obstacle Course: Practice of the physical agility obstacle course is not mandatory. If you wish to practice the physical agility obstacle course contact Sgt. Shepherd.
Paid incentives are offered if you possess a college degree and bilingual/Spanish‑speaking abilities.
Minimum Requirements:
21 years of age by graduation of academy
United States Citizen
Possess a valid driver’s license
High School Diploma or GED
One year of work experience involving public contact
No more than two moving violations within previous 24 months
No record of convictions within previous 60 months for DUI, eluding, leaving the scene of an accident or vehicular manslaughter
No record of 2nd or subsequent DUI
No current or previous revocations of suspension of license within previous 60 months due to a moving violation
Not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty or no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Not have been convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to a Class 1 or 2 misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or any offense that would be any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, including but not limited to petit larceny under 18.2‑96, or any offense involving moral turpitude that would be a misdemeanor if committed in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Not have been convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to any misdemeanor sex offense in the Commonwealth of Virginia, another state, or the United States, including but not limited to sexual battery under 18.2‑67.4 or consensual sexual intercourse with a minor 15 or older under clause (ii) of 18.2‑371
Not have been convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to domestic assault under 18.2‑57.2, or any offense that would be domestic assault under the laws of another state or the United States
Undergo a background investigation including fingerprint‑based criminal history records inquiries to both the CCRE and FBI
Undergo a physical examination, subsequent to a conditional offer of employment
Not have produced a positive result on a pre‑employment drug screening
Persons testing should be interested in a full‑time position involving general police work in protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances in the City of Fredericksburg and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
