The First Assistant Store Director is the primary contact for customers, providing friendly, courteous, and helpful service daily. They assist the Store Director with store operations and supervise 100+ employees. This salaried, non‑union position reports directly to the Store Director.
The First Assistant Store Director manages the store during the Store Director’s absence, supervising all employees, including orientation, training, scheduling, payroll, performance evaluation, and personnel actions. They handle security, cash control, employee complaints, accidents/injuries, sanitation, office and accounting functions, stock conditions, and interdepartmental communication.
Key Responsibilities
Overall management responsibility for store operation during Store Director’s absence, including performance, cash control, inventory and security, customer service, and staff management.
Track, analyze, and take action to improve store performance by forecasting weekly/daily sales goals and meeting or exceeding established goals.
Communicate sales goals, department performance and sales opportunities with staff to ensure positive results.
Forecast, schedule, and monitor labor to align with store sales and productivity guidelines and wage budgets; create action plans for cost control.
Support the Store Director in executing strategies to improve product placement and appearance.
Monitor display accuracy and appearance to implement promotions and maintain in‑stock conditions.
Manage store maintenance, cleanliness, safety and sanitation.
Oversee handling of cash and accounting; ensure store security.
Prioritize, plan, and coordinate work activities and manage time and resources to meet objectives.
Ensure compliance with legal requirements and company policies and procedures, including check cashing, security, safety, sanitation, wage and hour, etc.
Focus on customer satisfaction and ensure employees provide superior service.
Select, train, develop, and manage job performance of store employees with assistance of other management personnel.
Provide constructive feedback, set performance expectations, and give developmental guidance.
Maintain professional relationships with union officials and ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
Preserve positive working relationships with direct reports, peers, supervisors, suppliers, and customers when handling complex or difficult situations.
Motivate others to perform the job and work toward common objectives; serve as a role model.
May perform other management duties as needed to keep the store functioning effectively.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of assistant manager experience managing a department/team in multi‑department retail or service operation, OR two years as a department manager with similar responsibility.
High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.
Strong customer service and supervisory skills.
Solid understanding of overall store operations.
Proven strong leadership skills.
Ability to stand 100% of the shift and work in a fast‑paced environment.
Ability to use hands, arms, legs, and feet for sustained action (walking around the store, stocking, rotating product).
Travel May be required to travel for training or corporate programs, and to assist other stores when necessary.
Schedules With many of our stores operating 24 hours per day, interested applicants must allow for a variety of shifts and long hours, including nights, holidays, and weekends. Days off during the work week are seldom taken consecutively.
