Description
The Phlebotomist is responsible for collection of blood specimens, for performing laboratory office duties, or processing laboratory specimens. Laboratory office registering patients, accurately and completely entering all necessary data into the computer system, specimen accessioning, answering telephone calls, and processing paperwork. Specimen processing duties will include preparation of specimens for testing and/or for sending to the central laboratory or to a reference laboratory. In addition to handling blood, body fluid and urine specimens according to established procedures, they may also perform limited waived and specified non-waived POC tests as authorized by the Laboratory Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Collects patient samples
Informs patient of collection procedures (to collect non-blood specimens)
Identifies patient using two unique identifiers
Collects patient samples using age/sample-appropriate collection technique and collection container.
Assures specimen adequacy
Provides post-phlebotomy care and instructions.
Performs waived/moderate complexity testing as authorized by the director.
Labels specimens ensuring correct
Patient label
Label orientation on specimen
Writes date/time and initials on label
Carries specimens to designated laboratory area
Operates pneumatic tube, as required

Education and/or Experience
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Previous Phlebotomy experience and/or training is required
Background in a medical laboratory and/or knowledge of medical terminology is preferred
Phlebotomy certification from ASPT, NCA, ASCP or equivalent preferred
