Job Summary

The Director of Environmental, Health & Safety provides strategic and operational leadership for all environmental, health and safety programs across the organization. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while building a culture of safety excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Responsible for overseeing safety and health programs, DOT and fleet compliance, environmental sustainability initiatives, this leader partners with Operations, Fleet, HR, and Facilities to protect employees, customers, and the company.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Safety Leadership & Compliance

Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of company-wide safety programs, policies, and procedures.

Ensure full compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and other applicable safety and environmental regulations.

Drive adherence to safe work practices, including proper use of PPE, vehicle safety, equipment operation, and hazard control.

Conduct and oversee regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments in field and facility operations.

Manage incident reporting, root cause analysis, and corrective action processes to prevent reoccurrence.

Maintain and oversee safety documentation, training records, and compliance reports.

Responsible for the emergency response plan and water backup plan for nurseries and farms.

Environmental Health & Sustainability

Oversee environmental programs including waste management, chemical handling, and stormwater/spill prevention.

Ensure proper management of hazardous materials, SDS documentation, and compliance with EPA and state environmental standards.

Partner with Facilities and Operations to improve environmental performance, reduce waste, and promote sustainability initiatives.

Lead audits to ensure compliance with environmental permits, reporting requirements, and emergency response standards.

Develop environmental training for employees to promote awareness and regulatory compliance.

Specifically responsible for pesticide application training and compliance.

Fleet & Transportation Safety (DOT)

Manage DOT compliance, driver qualification files, vehicle inspections, and accident reporting.

Oversee training for CDL and non-CDL drivers on safe vehicle operation and federal regulations.

Coordinate drug and alcohol testing programs in accordance with DOT requirements.

Analyze fleet data to identify trends, implement corrective actions, and reduce preventable incidents.

Training & Development

Develop and deliver comprehensive EHS training programs across all levels of the organization.

Ensure consistent onboarding and refresher training for all employees on key safety topics (e.g., hazard communication, PPE use, emergency response).

Coach leaders and supervisors on maintaining safe work environments and enforcing accountability.

Promote safety engagement through communication campaigns, recognition programs, and leadership involvement.

Strategic Leadership & Continuous Improvement

Establish measurable goals for injury reduction, compliance performance, and cultural improvement.

Monitor and analyze safety and environmental performance metrics (e.g., TRIR, DART, claims frequency, audit results).

Present reports and strategic recommendations to executive leadership.

Lead emergency preparedness and business continuity planning efforts.

Stay current with emerging regulations, best practices, and technologies in EHS and loss prevention.

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

10+ years of progressive experience in safety, environmental, or EHS leadership; field‑based or multi‑site experience preferred.

Deep knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations and standards.

Demonstrated success leading large‑scale EHS and security programs.

Professional certifications strongly preferred (CSP, CHST, CIH, or equivalent).

Proven ability to lead teams, influence senior leadership, and drive results.

Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Risk Management, or related field (Master’s preferred).

Physical requirements/Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 45 pounds. Able to work outdoors for extended periods of time in possibly extreme conditions, including rain, heat, sun, and wind.
