Overview
The Surgical Technologist, under the supervision of the Director of Perioperative Services, Clinical Manager, operating room Charge Nurse, and the Registered Nurse, provides services in a designated area according to department and hospital policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives. The role works cooperatively within the department and with other services to support safe, high-quality health care; assists in patient care, transports equipment, aids in room turnovers, and prepares case supplies and equipment. The Surgical Technologist selects and prepares appropriate supplies and equipment for surgical cases, ensures equipment needs for the surgeon are met, and participates in OR activities related to quality improvement, continuing education, orientation of new personnel, and emergency preparedness. This role is a trained professional with advanced technical knowledge and skills in asepsis and intraoperative patient care across pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations. Based on expertise, the technician provides necessary instrumentation, supplies, and equipment for the surgical procedure and assists the surgical team under the direction of the circulating nurse.
Roles and Responsibilities
Assists the registered nurse and collaborates with other team members to formulate care plans to assure patient well-being. Provides intervention for all patient populations. Collaborates with an operating room circulator before procedures to carry out the plan of care: prepare the operating room, gather and prepare sterile supplies, instruments and equipment, maintain the sterile field using sterile and aseptic technique, and ensure surgical equipment functions properly and safely. Performs tasks at the sterile field as directed, including passing supplies and instruments, sponging or suctioning the operative site, preparing and cutting suture material, transferring and irrigating with fluids, handling specimens, retracting and assisting in counting sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments with the OR circulator. Verifies the surgical procedure site with the surgical team; checks indicators and integrity of all sterilized packages for each procedure. Maintains sterile technique, participates in draping, performs accurate counts, and uses surgical equipment appropriately surrounding a procedure. Maintains current BLS certification and engages in continuing education related to specialty practice; meets annual education requirements. Follows hospital policy regarding attendance and punctuality; demonstrates flexibility in response to changes in workload, emergencies, staffing, or scheduling. Demonstrates knowledge of surgical techniques and assists the surgeon, aiming for efficient use of time, motion, and materials. Adheres to unit-specific policies, procedures, and protocols; demonstrates tissue retraction, suction, irrigation, and hemostasis as directed by the surgeon. Maintains department-specific skills and competencies, including high-risk, low-volume, and problem-prone competencies. Provides retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization and uses appropriate instruments and techniques. Demonstrates initiative to learn new procedures and equipment; maintains self-direction and assists colleagues as needed. Maintains clinical competency across surgical services and supports a respectful work environment. Prepares surgical suites with appropriate instruments and supplies, assembling items according to physicians’ preference cards; collaborates effectively with surgeons. Performs effectively under increasing workload and high stress; prioritizes tasks to complete duties within allocated time. Assists with moving and positioning of patients; supports Perioperative Services, Nursing Division, and Beth Israel Lahey Health Anna Jaques in delivering safe, efficient care. Masters new work routines, methods, and techniques; stays informed about current trends and practices and suggests policy or procedure updates when appropriate. Assesses age-specific needs to provide care and equipment for specialized operative techniques used by the surgical team. Participates in OR activities related to quality improvement, continuing education, orientation of new personnel, and emergency preparedness. Safety and Compliance
Keeps medication preparation areas clean, orderly, well lit, and free of clutter. Inspects equipment for proper function; arranges instruments according to procedure; differentiates sterilization methods for necessary equipment. Maintains sterile field and adheres to aseptic technique during surgery; follows protocols to prevent wrong-site or wrong-patient procedures. Ensures clear, timely communication of care information to all providers involved in a patient’s care. Practices proper hand hygiene and does not use restricted abbreviations in documentation. Assists with orientation and development of new staff and contributes to problem resolution and performance evaluation. Job Requirements

Must be a graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program. Experience

Physical Demands: Provide direct patient care including lifting, standing, bending, walking; typical loads described as lifting approximately 30 lbs, pushing up to 200 lbs, pulling 100-150 lbs. $33.50 - $49.78 per hour. This base hourly wage range is what the organization reasonably expects to pay at this time. Actual compensation is determined by factors including seniority, education, training, experience, certifications, geography, responsibilities, or other applicable factors.
