Job Summary Maintains responsibility for specimen processing, test performance, test result reporting, clerical and patient‑care support services with a high level of accuracy, precision and timeliness while ensuring compliance with departmental and regulatory agency standards. Works in two or more laboratory sections—including processing, phlebotomy and microbiology—depending on laboratory needs. Works under the supervision of a Laboratory Supervisor and, in their absence, a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS). Examines and interprets test results to identify abnormalities across blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology, toxicology and urinalysis.
Job Requirements
Associate’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology: Required
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent: Preferred
Two years of Medical Technologist experience in a hospital setting: Preferred
Licenses/Certifications
Current state Medical Lab Technician license (CA and HI): Preferred
Current certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) (CA and HI): Preferred
Facility Specific License/Certifications
Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT): Required
Essential Functions
Prepare sterile media on plates, jars or test tubes for bacterial cultures; incubate cultures per specified times and temperatures. Prepare solutions, reagents and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
Maintain detailed records of tests performed. Report laboratory test results to appropriate personnel; recognize quality control shifts and trends and take appropriate action when necessary. Follow critical value policy and notify the appropriate personnel or medical doctor (MD) timely with required documentation including read‑back of results.
Calibrate and perform routine maintenance on test equipment. Clean and sterilize laboratory equipment, glassware and instruments. Operate automated instrumentation and perform manual tests accurately and in a timely manner. Enter orders and process specimens using the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Perform quality control procedures, take required actions for out‑of‑control situations, document results, and perform repeats and dilutions appropriately. Use laboratory positive patient identification procedures to ensure specimen integrity for pre‑analytical, analytical and post‑analytical testing.
Print worksheets, logs and other required reports. Resolve logs and communicate pertinent information to coworkers and incoming shift personnel. Process incoming specimens—including microbiology, if required—labeling, centrifuging, separating, delivering specimens to the correct department and assisting other departments as needed.
Receive incoming purchased reagents and supplies and document date and time received.
Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
