Essential Responsibilities
Apply knowledge, methodologies, and principles of safety engineering as defined in MIL-STD-882 and software safety engineering outlined in the Joint Software System Safety Engineering Handbook (JSSSEH).
Evaluate complex aviation systems and software designs, design requirements, support equipment, facilities, and operations to identify hazards, their causal factors, categorize risk, establish safety requirements, and determine mitigating controls.
Independently analyze and recommend safety criteria in system design, equipment, and procedures to control or eliminate hazards.
Collaborate with various design teams in the execution of MIL-STD-882E hazard analyses.
Review and prepare engineering and technical analyses, reports, change proposals, and other technical documentation for system safety and in support of Airworthiness Certification IAW MIL-HDBK-516.
Review Test Plans and Procedures for safety requirements verification and potential hazardous operations.
Perform safety analyses in accordance with MIL-STD-882 and software safety analyses (experience with AGILE development) in accordance with the JSSSEH.
Effectively communicate with all levels of leadership and customers and work independently.
Understand requirements development, system/software architecture, hardware/software design, software code implementation, test, verification, and validation.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline with 2 years of experience OR Master of Science Degree in a STEM discipline.
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance; interim secret clearance is required to start.
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance.
Must have experience with MIL-STD-882 or similar.
Must be familiar with analyses such as preliminary hazard analyses, function/system/subsystem hazard analyses, fault tree analyses, software system safety analyses, and/or safety assessment reports.
Preferred Qualifications
BS in Software Engineering or Computer Engineering.
Ability to develop, review, update and approve system safety artifacts and system safety requirements.
Familiar with requirements development, system/software architecture, hardware/software design, software code implementation, test, verification, and validation.
Ability to analyze, recommend, and drive safety into system design, equipment, and procedures to mitigate or eliminate hazards.
Familiarity with requirements tools such as DOORS, Cameo, CPLM, and safety and reliability tools such as PTC Windchill Quality Solutions, Agile software tools, JIRA, FISHEYE, and/or Confluence.
Working knowledge of military systems safety and process standards and their industry equivalents such as MIL-STD-882, DO-178B/C, DO-248, DO-254, ARP-4754, ARP-4761, MIL-HDBK-516C, etc.
Working knowledge of flight test engineering, software systems integration engineering, and software test engineering.
Working knowledge of detect and avoid systems and associated process standards such as DO-365.
Experience in hardware/software integration.
System Software Safety Experience.
Experience in military aviation.
Salary & Benefits Primary Level Salary Range: $77,200.00 - $115,800.00.
Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
