Overview
MSU’s Cryo‑EM Core Facility is seeking a manager to oversee daily operations of a world‑class Cryo‑EM facility located on the Bozeman campus. The facility houses a 200 kV Talos Arctica cryo‑TEM equipped with a Gatan K3 detector, two 120 kV microscopes (Tecnai Spirit, Leo912), a Vitrobot Mark IV, and significant computational resources.

Salary Range:
$90,000 – $120,000
per year, commensurate with experience
Appointment Type: Professional Contract (Term: Semester)

Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain all microscopes and peripheral equipment, working with vendors for repairs.
Train users in cryo‑EM data collection and analysis.
Assist users in collecting cryo‑EM data for single‑particle analysis, cryo‑electron tomography, and micro‑electron diffraction.
Collect negative‑stain TEM data on purified macromolecules, organelles, or resin‑embedded sectioned samples.
Maintain the facility’s usage calendar and assist users with scheduling instruments.
Manage the facility’s computational infrastructure (Linux/Windows).
Stay current in relevant research methodologies and pursue professional development.
Assist the core director with strategic planning for future staffing and capital upgrades.
Order and maintain all necessary supplies for daily operations.
Supervise hiring of other core employees, including assistants, students, and graduate students.
Maintain the operating budget and implement user fees to support a balanced budget.
Ensure timely invoicing and billing of core users in cooperation with the core program manager.
Required Qualifications
PhD in physical or life sciences, or Master’s degree (or equivalent) with 4+ years of experience.
Demonstrated experience with the cryo‑EM workflow from sample preparation to model building.
Experience operating and maintaining transmission electron microscopes.
IT‑administration experience on Linux and Windows platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience managing or working in a research core facility.
Experience preparing resin‑embedded biological samples.
Experience with focused ion‑beam milling and correlative light and electron microscopy.
Experience with fluorescence light microscopy.
Prior STEM teaching experience.
Experience in entrepreneurial, business, marketing, or customer‑service environments.

Work effectively across multiple disciplines with students, faculty, and staff.
