Summary Performs a variety of semi‑skilled and skilled trades work in constructing, maintaining and repairing the building structures and facilities of the city.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Builds, repairs, and installs counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, doors, building framework, and trim.

Installs glass in windows, doors, and partitions.

Performs building interior repairs and maintenance such as repairing damaged doors, walls, caulking, painting, fixture leaks, roof patching, boilers/heating plants, etc.

Cleans and prepares surfaces for painting, paints buildings, walls, floors, etc. with latex or oil paints.

Makes minor repairs to plumbing and heating systems; discuss major repairs with supervisor.

Installs wiring and conduit for installed machines and equipment; connects power supply wires and cables, and performs minor electrical work—major repairs require supervisor approval.

Assembles and positions mechanical equipment per diagrams; installs air ducts, smoke pipes, blowers, and stokers; wraps insulation; adjusts timers and thermostats; cuts, bends, and crimps sheet metal for HVAC systems.

Drives vehicle to pick up materials, supplies, and equipment for each project.

Installs ceiling grids and replaces damaged ceiling tile; installs floor tile, carpeting, flooring systems, and wall coverings.

Installs window shades, blinds, curtain rods, wall fans, and door locks; performs repairs and projects as assigned.

Repairs and/or replaces equipment as needed.

Visually inspects each facility to ensure city property is maintained safely and economically; keeps appropriate records and notes of repairs.

Gathers tools and supplies; drills holes for wiring or other construction work; performs minor repairs such as replacing handles, knobs, fuses, sockets, bulbs, and switches; maintains tools and equipment in order.

Orders materials and parts with purchase orders.

Performs snow removal during winter months; reports to work off days as required.

Requires forklift and manlift skills.

Cleans work area, machines, tools, and equipment.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities May occasionally direct helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.

Skills, Abilities, Qualifications

Aptitude for public safety with high public contact.

Knowledge of state law and local ordinances.

Ability to execute direction from superiors in routine and stressful situations.

Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.

Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Prioritization and organization of multiple tasks.

Calmness and effective decision‑making under stress.

Positive working relationships with law enforcement personnel and the public.

Computer proficiency, accurate data entry, and use of various software programs.

Physical ability to perform the demands of the position (lifting, climbing, etc.).

Education and Experience

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Working knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, supplies, and carpentry methods; ability to do minor repairs; first aid and safety knowledge.

Basic skills in operating appropriate power tools and stationary equipment; knowledge of boiler and heating controls.

Independent work style and adherence to schedule; safe use of tools; effective relationships with coworkers.

Criminal and background checks required.

Physical Demands Regular requirements include walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Frequent use of hands, reaching, and occasional lifting up to 100 pounds; vision requirements include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Work Environment Work often occurs near moving mechanical parts or extreme weather; may involve high, precarious places, exposure to fumes, chemicals, or electrical shock. Noise level is moderately loud. Appropriate protective equipment must be used for assigned tasks.
