GIS Technician will work under direct supervision of GIS Specialist(s) to gather, import, develop, update, analyze, document, and manage GIS data for a wide variety of projects related to environmental planning, cultural and natural resource management, and regulatory compliance. The position will generate data/maps for internal use for field efforts and external use for clients; develop draft and final maps for various reports/documents; and export final data for use by agencies, engineers, partners, and other entities.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in geography, cartography, forestry, geology, earth or environmental sciences or a related field. Plus at least six months of applied experience using GIS in a production environment; or

Certificate from a 2-year GIS program plus at least six months of applied experience using GIS in a production environment.

Core Competencies

Effectively communicate with resource team staff and GIS team members to coordinate GIS analysis and project deliverables.

Independently create or modify features using basic editing workflows.

Independently digitize field resources from GPS, KML/KMZ, PDF comments, and field map markups.

Prepare project deliverables with moderate supervision.

Utilize ArcGIS Online and ESRI Field Maps software platforms to support field data collection and post-field data processing.

Meet deadlines and hours per task targets as assigned by senior personnel; communicate early any potential failure to meet these targets.

Performance Expectations and Responsibilities Employees in this position should be familiar with ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online platforms. Experience with ESRI Field Maps, ESRI Survey123, QGIS, or CADD platforms (AutoCAD and/or MicroStation) a plus, but not required. The position requires a “consultant” approach and mentality to meet project schedule requirements and demands. The position may require greater than 40 hours per week at some times of the year and may require weekend work based on project schedule. In person meetings and occasional overnight travel may be required. Field work is not a component of this position.

Expected Duties

Complete basic editing tasks on existing and newly collected/created spatial and non-geospatial data in support of GIS/Graphics department work.

Utilize ESRI platforms to edit and analyze data and create maps or other deliverables from a wide range of data and file types.

Manage data layer properties and perform basic operations within attribute tables (i.e. sort, calculate field, add field).

Create web based field maps and report figures using pre-existing templates.

Perform common geoprocessing analyses (e.g. intersect, clip, merge).

Follow data maintenance protocols including file naming, directory structure, and metadata creation.

Assist with the creation of Field Maps GPS layers and post-field exporting and processing of GPS field data using ESRI software and apps.

Support GIS/Graphics department to meet project needs on time and on budget.

Efficiently complete data editing tasks and prepare deliverables with limited supervision.

Utilize ESRI ArcGIS Online and Field Maps to set up feature layers for field GPS data collection and post-field data processing.

Perform related duties as required.

Responsible for knowing and complying with ERO policies and adhering to expected attendance policies.

Skills and Abilities

Proficient in ESRI ArcGIS Pro software and ArcGIS Online portal.

Proficient with the Microsoft 365 Suite of programs.

Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop a plus, but not required.

Effective communication skills – written and verbal.

Organized, detail oriented.

Proven ability to handle multiple priorities.

Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams throughout the company.

Physical Requirements Applicants must be physically capable and possess the skills necessary to perform all aspects of the position requirements, with reasonable accommodations. This position is primarily office based and involves exposure to computer screens and requires regular use of a computer, keyboard, and mouse. Lifting up to 10 pounds, Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing. Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Hybrid Office This position is based in an ERO designated office with an option for a hybrid work schedule based on employee performance, business needs, fieldwork, and client needs.

Compensation Full time hourly position: $22-$34 per hour depending on experience.
