We are seeking an experienced and capable Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant to provide ongoing locum coverage. This position involves first-assist responsibilities in the OR, pre- and post-operative care, and vein harvesting. The role requires independent clinical judgment and a proactive approach to working alongside surgeons in a high-acuity hospital setting.
APP Cardiothoracic Surgery ASAP Start Schedule: M-F (6a-2p) Call: 5% on weekdays, 75% weekends (ER Call) Patient Population: Adults ONLY Office/Clinic = 10%, Hospital = 90% Setting: Outpatient and Inpatient/Acute Care Daily Caseload: 10 patient per day - 5 Admissions, 5 ICU, 4 Surgeries Support Staff: 4 physicians, 7 mid-levels EMR: Epic Experience: Minimum of 2 years Required Skills: Must be able to harvest vein and first assist surgeon on all open heart cases, suturing, and pre/post op surgical care
  • Vein harvesting for bypass surgery
  • First-assist in cardiac surgery
  • Strong suturing techniques
  • ICU patient management
  • Surgical documentation and post-op care
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced hospital environment
  • Monday through Friday: 6:00 AM 2:00 PM
  • Call: Required (5% weekdays, 75% weekends)
  • Overtime may apply after 8 hours onsite
  • Active South Carolina PA license (Required)
  • NCCPA Certified (Preferred)
  • Minimum 2 years of recent Cardiothoracic Surgery experience
  • Proficient in vein harvesting, suturing, and OR assistance for open-heart cases
  • ACLS and DEA certification required
  • Familiarity with Epic EMR preferred
  • Assist surgeons during open-heart procedures as first assist
  • Harvest saphenous veins for bypass surgeries
  • Manage ICU and inpatient responsibilities including admissions and rounding
  • Provide pre- and post-op patient care
  • Participate in outpatient clinic duties as needed
  • Support and collaborate with a team of physicians and advanced practice providers
  • Share in call responsibilities as scheduled
