Opto-Mechanical Engineer

At Meta, we're building the future of human connection through groundbreaking technology. Our mission is to invent and develop the next generation of experiences that will redefine how people interact, communicate, and explore the world. As an Opto-Mechanical Engineer in our research organization, you will play a pivotal role in advancing AR/MR display technologies. You will contribute to the creation of advanced system concepts and drive the design and execution of novel hardware solutions. In this role, you'll collaborate with experienced engineers, scientists, and leadershelping to define the cutting edge of AR/MR. We're seeking candidates with a proven track record in designing and developing opto-mechanical systems, expertise in CAD modeling, and hands-on experience with optics bench setups. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and build advanced optical systems for next-generation AR/MR applications. Responsibilities

Design and build engineering prototypes for AR/MR systems, ranging from single units to small batches Develop mechanical and opto-mechanical components and assemblies using CAD tools Collaborate within cross-functional teamsincluding optical, mechanical, electrical, software, and firmware engineeringto achieve prototype objectives Partner with relevant stakeholders to ensure prototypes meet functional and design requirements Coordinate procurement of parts and manage vendor relationships for prototyping activities Perform CAD modeling and simulation for mechanical and opto-mechanical systems Construct and maintain complex CAD models integrating mechanical, optical, and electrical components Model and optimize optical systems for integration into prototypes Assemble, test, and troubleshoot opto-mechanical and optical systems, including prototypes and laboratory setups Manage the end-to-end prototype development cycle: design, fabrication, assembly, and testing Document bill of materials (BOMs), assembly procedures, and test results for prototypes Capture and share lessons learned and best practices to inform future projects Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience 2+ years of experience in opto-mechanical engineering or related/relevant fields Experience in the design, development, and prototyping of optical and/or opto-mechanical systems Experience with optics bench setup and testing Proficiency with CAD tools such as SOLIDWORKS, Siemens NX, or similar platforms for 3D/2D modeling Understanding of mechanical tolerancing, statistical tolerance analysis, simulation, and/or analysis techniques (e.g., FEA, Design of Experiments) Proven technical communication skills Preferred Qualifications

Experience working on mechanical design and productization of augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) display systems Extensive hands-on experiences with CAD design tools NX or ProE is preferred Hands-on experience with mechanical simulation tools, such as ANSYS or Abaqus, with working knowledge of material behaviors including polymers, adhesives, and brittle materials Working knowledge of main optical components in one or more of the following areas: waveguide design and manufacturing, LCoSi display, uLED, eyetracking Knowledge of image processing and optical-display metrics, such as MTF, contrast, luminance, color uniformity Familiar with data processing and analysis tools like Matlab, VS Code, Python, JMP, Tableau, or similar Experience with design for manufacturability and assembly, with a focus on cost-effective and efficient design solutions Experience working with offshore Contract Manufacturers in delivering consumer electronics products in mass production $111,000/year to $164,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
