Summary
The Social Worker practices in the inpatient psychiatric and/or senior behavioral unit(s) of VA San Diego Healthcare System. The GS-9 entry level Social Worker has less than one year of post-MSW experience and is not yet licensed or certified at the independent practice level. The Social Worker must be working toward completion of prerequisites for licensure or certification. The Social Worker provides services within the psychiatric inpatient unit.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
English Language Proficiency – Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C.
Education – Master’s degree in social work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
Licensure – Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s degree level
VHA may waive the licensure or certification requirement for persons who are otherwise qualified – pending completion of state prerequisites for licensure/certification examinations (this exception only applies at the GS-9 grade level). For GS-11 and above, the candidate must be licensed or certified.
Duties
The Social Worker may conduct individual and/or group psychotherapy (under clinical supervision) within the inpatient unit.
The Social Worker works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of staff to provide psychosocial and psychotherapeutic support to inpatients.
The incumbent independently conducts psychosocial assessments and develops treatment plans in collaboration with the Veteran, family, and interdisciplinary treatment team.
The incumbent coordinates community-based services, including information and referral for additional services from VA, government, and community agencies.
The Social Worker provides crisis intervention services, coordinates family conferences, and serves as liaison to family members.
The incumbent evaluates and documents psychosocial needs of Veterans and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and adherence to treatment plans.
Work Schedule: Monday — Friday 7:30 am – 4:00 pm
Recruitment Incentive (Sign‑on Bonus): Not Authorized
Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 37‑50 days of annual paid time off per year (13‑26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays)
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment – up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment – full‑time employees with total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs up to $416.66 per month.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% contributions by VA Insurance; federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care insurance programs available during retirement.
