Senior Clinical Coding Specialist - OR Surgery

Summary As a Senior Clinical Coding Specialist, you will analyze patient medical records and abstract clinical data by assigning appropriate codes in accordance with coding classification systems. You will review patient encounters for accurate code assignment of diagnoses and modifiers, enter codes into the 3M encoder, query physicians when documentation is unclear, and serve as a resource to other departments regarding abstracted coded data.
Job Responsibilities
Effectively communicate and collaborate with the coding team, management, peers, business office, and external customers.
Provide detailed questions and supportive feedback to management and coordinators for quality reviews and coding education and training.
Support management and coordinators on internal and external requests for coding corrections, edits, or re-reviews.
Promptly report workflow or system issues to management.
Review medical record documentation, understand and assign primary ICD‑10 CM, CPT/HCPCS, modifiers, and additional coding methodologies.
Maintain coding quality, including DNB thresholds and compliance with official coding guidelines and policies.
Participate in coding clinics, continuing education, and team meetings to enhance professional growth and coding accuracy.
Qualifications
Associate’s Degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
Required 5 years of clinical coding experience for complex or multi‑specialty settings or 3 years with a relevant degree.
Substitution of education with equivalent years of experience on a one‑to‑one basis is acceptable.
Strong foundation in medical coding principles, ICD‑10, CPT, HCPCS, and practical experience with inpatient and outpatient coding.
Knowledge of 3M encoding, EPIC, or coding books and ability to use coding software effectively.
Preferred Experience
Previous experience working in a teaching hospital setting, specifically OR surgical coding.
Experience with Breast and Plastics, Surgical Oncology, Head and Neck, and/or Urology specialties.
Proven ability to handle complex surgical coding scenarios and documentation challenges.
Licenses and Certifications
RHIA – Registered Health Information Administrator (AHIMA)
RHIT – Registered Health Information Technician (AHIMA)
CCS‑Certified Coding Specialist (AHIMA)
CCA – Certified Coding Associate (AHIMA)
Certified Coder‑AHIMA or AAPC certification
CPC‑A – Certified Professional Coder‑Apprentice (AAPC)
COC – Certified Outpatient Coding (AAPC)
Other Requirements Must pass the pre‑employment skills test administered by Human Resources. Must support the security and integrity of critical infrastructure as defined by state law.
