Senior System Administrator – Jefferson County, Colorado

Apply now for this full‑time position at Jefferson County’s Business Innovation & Technology (BIT) Services division. The role supports the County’s IT infrastructure, including virtual, cloud and physical servers, to provide reliable, cost‑effective services to over 500,000 citizens.

Job Summary As a Senior System Administrator you will plan, implement, maintain and optimize the County’s computing resources, including Windows and Linux servers, storage, networking and cloud services. You will work with vendors, coordinate projects, and provide expert support to both technical and non‑technical users.

Primary Responsibilities

Determine appropriate hardware and software configurations for moderately complex to complex systems.

Evaluate release impact and implement test plans to ensure quality.

Plan system expansion and technology upgrades; coordinate with vendors and contractors to ensure timely delivery.

Lead troubleshooting of critical or complex system issues, identify root causes and implement sustainable solutions.

Maintain capacity forecasts, analyze server utilization, and recommend growth strategies.

Audit user accounts, enforce security policies and recommend system enhancements.

Develop and maintain procedures, documentation and scripts for operational efficiency.

Mentor junior staff and train teams on new technologies.

Design and implement proactive solutions that reduce service outages and improve performance.

Work collaboratively to plan future enterprise architectures and roadmap implementations.

Required Qualifications

Minimum 3 years of experience in systems administration and database management.

Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field (equivalent education/experience considered).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

Initiative, innovation and resilience.

Excellent written and verbal communication.

Automation & scripting: PowerShell & Python.

Experience with VMware, Hyper-V or similar virtualization platforms.

Windows Server, Linux, Active Directory, Group Policy, SCCM, Intune and Exchange administration.

Azure, Intune, AWS, or other cloud expertise.

Networking fundamentals and firewall experience (NSX or equivalent).

Exchange Hybrid, ProofPoint configuration.

Storage, backup, and disaster recovery (SAN, NAS, cloud).

Advanced knowledge of AD/Exchange/Intune/GPO/VMware/Windows Server.

Experience with community teams and security hardening.

Relevant certifications: MCSA/MCSE/MCSM, Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert, MCTS.

Compensation & Benefits Annual Salary: $102,000 – $115,000 (based on education, experience, skills).

Work Arrangement Standard full‑time schedule Monday – Thursday. Hybrid work permitted; location and remote work determined by business needs.
