Responsible for designating, documenting, and quality‑assuring overhead and underground utilities on construction projects, including communication lines, power lines, hydronic systems, natural gas lines, fiber optics, water lines, sewer lines, and more. Requires daily operation and maintenance of subsurface utility locating and survey equipment, and occasional travel.

Key Responsibilities

Accurately designate overhead and underground utilities per ASCE 38‑02 standards.

Complete detailed field investigations.

Consult on schedule planning for field operations.

Problem‑solve daily field issues.

Review record information before and during investigations.

Coordinate with drafting staff to ensure complete data transfer.

Assist the Field Operations Manager with quality assurance reviews.

Maintain proficiency in geophysical locating technologies: EM, GPR, APL, CCTV sewer camera.

Coordinate with clients, utility and property stakeholders.

Lead field operations for McCarthy Mapping projects.

Coordinate subcontracted vendors for traffic control, excavation, saw cutting, etc.

Train new Utility Designators.

Ensure quality assurance of utilities designated in the field.

Investigation Documentation

Record utilities & structures in the field using electronic devices.

Produce accurate field reports promptly.

Attach quality pictures to correct structures and reports.

Perform daily quality assurance of field notes & reports.

Data Collection

Coordinate and/or oversee data collection.

Ensure completeness of collected utility data.

Equipment

Use equipment per manufacturer guidelines and maintain service life.

Clean, maintain, and calibrate equipment per scheduled maintenance.

Secure equipment physically.

Maintain company vehicles per manufacturer & fleet service schedules.

Operate vehicles in compliance with DOT regulations.

Safety

Promote a safety‑first value with an “All In” philosophy.

Align with McCarthy Safety Policies and Procedures manual.

Follow project‑specific safety requirements.

Assist in developing site‑specific safety plans.

Ensure safety policies and procedures are followed by personnel and subcontractors.

Operate vehicles per McCarthy Vehicle Safety Guidelines.
