Job Summary Under the general supervision of a police supervisor, this position enforces City of Farmers Branch parking ordinances that govern parking of motor vehicles; interacts with the public regarding enforcement issues and general information; services and maintains parking enforcement equipment such as ticket writers, parking enforcement vehicles, license plate readers and signs; performs courtesy patrols; and carries out related duties, including general crime scene processing, in a police department setting that does not require a licensed police officer.

Responsibilities

Patrol assigned areas on foot or in a vehicle to enforce motor vehicle compliance with the City of Farmers Branch parking ordinances and State of Texas Disabled Parking laws.

Use a mobile data computer in accordance with department policy and State Law.

Issue parking tickets for motor vehicles in violation of parking regulations; take photographs with an electronic ticket writer for violations; print tickets and place them on vehicles or present them to vehicle operators.

Operate an electronic ticket writer in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.

Complete and maintain various activity reports as needed.

Commission and de‑commission assets belonging to the police department as necessary.

Answer questions and provide information regarding parking regulations to the public.

Provide courtroom testimony in court concerning parking violation citations issued.

Assist with the maintenance of department vehicles by delivering and picking up vehicles from the city vehicle maintenance shop.

Assist police officers with traffic control, security patrol, and delivering police‑related equipment to work and patrol sites as needed.

Conduct traffic surveys utilizing traffic survey equipment and software.

Tow and deploy traffic radar trailers and message boards.

Provide logistical support as needed during major incidents and for city events.

Conduct basic crime scene processing under the direction of a detective or a police supervisor, including photography, videography, and collection and logging of evidence.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Knowledge of basic operational, technical, or office processes.

Ability to operate a vehicle in the performance of essential job functions.

Experience using a department radio and/or cellular telephone in accordance with department policy.

Strong customer service skills, always providing positive service to the public.

Comprehensive knowledge of all parking ordinances of the City of Farmers Branch and other applicable state laws.

Familiarity with police department practices, policies, and procedures for assigned area.

Proficiency with computers and related equipment, hardware, and software to maintain databases, files, and records.

Knowledge of general office equipment and operational practices and procedures.

Knowledge of inventory control and purchasing practices and procedures.

Knowledge of basic custodial and maintenance practices and procedures.

Skill in effective oral and written communications.

Skill in assisting with a variety of administrative and routine department duties.

Skill in following verbal and written directions.

Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.

Special Requirements

Position is classified as a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.

Must pass a background investigation including a fingerprint‑based criminal history check for Criminal Justice Information System clearance.

Must pass a polygraph examination.

Must pass a psychological examination.

Must pass a pre‑employment drug screen and a pre‑employment physical exam.

Licenses and Certificates

Must possess a valid Class C state of Texas driver’s license.

Must be insurable under the City’s vehicle liability policy.

Work Environment Work is performed in office and field environments. Employees may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and hostile environments and vehicular traffic when assisting in traffic control or transporting equipment.

Physical Demands Typical physical activities include balancing, crawling, crouching, fingering, grasping, hearing, mental acuity, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, walking, and light work (lifting up to 20 lb occasionally or up to 10 lb to move objects).
