Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Hawaiian Culture & Place-Based Coordinator and Ka Ipu Ho'okele Wa'a Grant Manager, the Student Activities Coordinator will design and implement activities that meet the goal of the Ka Ipu Ho'okele Wa'a Title III grant to improve Native Hawaiian student engagement, achievement, and employability by increasing their digital literacy through a strengths-based, culturally relevant curriculum focused on digital storytelling from an indigenous lens.

Establish, manage, and strengthen community and industry-based partnerships to build a cadre of mentors with culturally relevant and place-based expertise in digital media, digital storytelling, creative media, and/or multimedia production.

Support Native Hawaiian retention strategies including the Native Hawaiian New Student Registration and the Native Hawaiian New Student Orientations.

Plan and coordinate culturally relevant and place-based workshops and field trips for students focused on digital literacy and digital storytelling.

Collaborate with community and campus partners to recruit and mentor Native Hawaiian students interested in developing culturally relevant and place-based digital literacy and digital storytelling skills.

Design student support activities for program participants, including providing college and career advising, monitoring participant academic progress, and referring participants to appropriate services to address social, economic, cultural, and/or disabilities barriers.

Recruit, train, and supervise Peer Mentors.

Assist the Principal Investigators with data collection and reporting.

Participates in professional development activities including training, workshops and conference travel.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiian Language, Education, Social Work, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, or related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for student affairs, student programming, academic advising and/or counseling, social services, or counseling; or equivalent education/training or experience. Related fields include Family Resources, Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Public Health, Rehabilitation Counseling, or Student Services.

Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of Native Hawaiian-serving programs as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.

Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with Native Hawaiian-serving programs.

Demonstrated experience showing the ability to initiate, plan and implement new programs and opportunities for student participation and development.

Excellent planning, organizational, and management skills; strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.

Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.

Ability and willingness to work outside of regular scheduled work hours.

Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated direct knowledge of Hawaiian language, culture, practices, protocols, and values, or major coursework (minimum of 24 credits) in Hawaiian Studies or related fields.

Ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the retention of Native Hawaiians for continuing education.

Demonstrated ability to develop and manage Native Hawaiian student serving programs, specifically at the University of Hawai'i.

Demonstrated ability to successfully partner with student services units in the University of Hawai'i System.

Demonstrated experience working directly with Native Hawaiian communities.

Prior work experience on a University of Hawai'i campus with experience with student academic and/or career counseling.

Familiarity with Native Hawaiian Student Services initiatives.

Experience working in natural resource management in Hawai'i.
