Job Description
As a Packaging Engineer at Harbor Freight, you will be responsible for leading the development, design, validation, and project management of packaging structures for consumer goods from concept to commercialization for new product launches.
Duties and Responsibilities
Work cross‑functionally with Marketing, Sourcing, and Engineering teams to design packaging structures which support the creative graphics process, supply chain, and merchandising needs
Advise business partners on packaging structures and requirements for products of various price points (good/better/best)
Utilize Solidworks, ArtiosCAD and TOPS to create digital concepts and structural drawings
Optimize supply chain packaging structure to ensure efficient/safe handling and picking in warehouses and stores
Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring adherence to timelines
Develop and coordinate performance testing plans to validate new/existing packaging
Work with product manufacturers and their packaging suppliers to ensure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability and ocean transport
Provide technical assistance and consultation to all areas of Marketing, Engineering, Sourcing, and Quality, as it relates to packaging
Partner with distribution center engineering team to determine optimum pack formats and improve ergonomic conditions
Lead and assist in rapid resolution of packaging/product damage
Develop & maintain global awareness of competitor product offerings and emerging design technologies in the packaging industry
Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements Education and Experience
Education Requirements: Bachelor of Science Degree in Packaging Engineering (required)
Years of Experience
0 - 2 yearsexperience in supporting new product development initiatives for consumer retail goods.
Skills
Functional knowledge of Solidworks, ArtiosCAD/AutoCAD, TOPS and Workfront (preferred)
Ability to thrive in a high‑energy and fast‑paced environment
Strong organizational and communication skills required
Knowledge of packaging materials: corrugated, paperboard, plastics, flexible films, labels, adhesives, and sealing technologies.
Knowledge of manufacturing methods of packaging materials: corrugated board, thermoforming, injection molding, and printing processes
Must be able to work collaboratively with Engineering, Marketing, Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Quality Engineering to execute projects from concept to closure
Ability to create new and unique ideas and an entrepreneurial spirit
Proficient using standard Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)
Prior packaging internship experience preferred
Physical Requirements QA - General office environment requiring ability to:
Stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time.
Speak and listen to others in person and over the phone and video conferencing.
Use keyboard and read from computer screen and reports.
The ability to lift up to 50 lbs. *Ability to travel frequently within China to various supplier manufacturing sites.
Ability to walk factory manufacturing operations and spend considerable time on the factory floor.

Must be able to perform this job safely in accordance with standard operating procedures and good manufacturing practices, without endangering the health or safety of self or others.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $69,500 – $104,200 depending on location, knowledge, skills, education and experience. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. Eligible Associates are able to enroll in our company’s 401k plan. Associates will accrue paid time off up to 236 hours per year (inclusive of PTO, floating holidays, and paid holidays). Paid sick time up to 80 hours per year unless otherwise required by law.
