Overview Software Engineering/Applications Leadership Advisory - Executive Technology Services for Global Enterprises is a senior advisory role within Gartner’s Executive Partners team. The position focuses on providing expert insight and guidance to senior IT leaders in software engineering and application domains across global Fortune 100‑500 organizations.

What you’ll do

Manage a portfolio of 28–30 software engineering and applications leaders reporting to CIOs.

Deliver value through regular briefings, workshops, webinars, and participation in Gartner events.

Coach and mentor clients on critical initiatives and challenges within the software engineering space using Gartner’s research and intellectual property.

Align client initiatives with enterprise CIO priorities, track and report value delivered.

Drive all phases of the member lifecycle—understand needs, align initiatives, deliver value, capture outcomes, and articulate impact to decision makers.

Ensure member retention and renewal of the subscription‑based service as a strategic partner.

Host and participate in periodic onsite and virtual member activities.

Collaborate with other Leadership Partners in the software engineering domain to improve team effectiveness and drive innovation.

What you’ll need

A university graduate (master’s degree preferred).

20+ years of software engineering leadership experience, responsible for an enterprise application portfolio and its full lifecycle (strategy, architecture, deployment, operation, evolution, retirement).

Direct reporting to a CIO as a Director or VP of Software Engineering or Enterprise Applications.

Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to provide actionable, outcome‑based advice.

High tolerance for ambiguity and experienced in leading through uncertain situations.

Excellent relationship building, listening, and verbal communication skills, with experience working with senior executives.

Experience coaching and mentoring senior executives.

Strong time‑management and organizational skills.

Subject Matter Expertise Ideal candidates have held the role of Director or VP of Software Engineering or Enterprise Applications and have ownership of the full lifecycle of the application portfolio. They possess deep knowledge of software trends, emerging best practices for both front‑end and “full stack” product design and development, and the ability to articulate technology and business adoption scenarios for modernizing software engineering organizations. A management‑consulting background and experience leading large‑scale ERP transformation programs are highly desirable. Digital transformation journeys from project‑oriented to product‑oriented organizations are also a plus.
