Gundersen Palmer Lutheran is seeking a .01 FTE Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join our Emergency Medicine group. Gundersen Palmer is a Critical Access Hospital that offers comprehensive care with a total of 25 beds. The hospital features a 7‑bed Emergency Department with additional capacity for overflow patients and a 20‑bed Medical Surgical Department to support a wide range of inpatient needs, as well as a 5‑bed Labor & Delivery unit dedicated to maternal and newborn care. Gundersen Palmer also operates three Family Practice Clinics providing primary care services, including Behavioral Health support, and multiple outreach specialty services that enhance access to specialized care for the community. This integrated approach allows Gundersen Palmer to deliver high‑quality, patient‑centered care across a variety of clinical needs. Full‑time practice consists of six 24‑hour shifts per month.
Position Purpose The NP performs the functions of examining, assessing, planning and implementing the health care of assigned patients in collaboration and under the general supervision of a licensed physician. The NP secures patient histories, performs physical examinations, orders laboratory tests, develops and implements treatment plans, performs diagnostic and treatment procedures, records findings, and provides patient education and counseling to enhance our effectiveness in providing primary care, preventive services and improved outreach. The NP prepares prescription orders for medications, including controlled substances, in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, under the guidance of a supervising physician.
Qualifications
Master of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment.
Current certification as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in Iowa.
Completion of an annual competency skills review.
Prescriptive authority for medications, including controlled substances, under guidance of a supervising physician.
Eligible to prescribe Schedule II controlled substances with prior approval.
Experience and proficiency with bedside and advanced emergency procedures such as advanced airway techniques, orthopedic reductions, laceration repairs, incision & drainage, etc.
Comfort providing care for patients of all ages, including pediatrics and adults.
Completion of fellowship and/or certification of advanced qualification in Emergency Medicine preferred.
Working Conditions The NP may be exposed to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparation, hostile situations, stressful situations and other conditions common to working in a health care environment. All staff must adhere to HIPAA and confidentiality policies. Patient information is accessed via secure electronic systems, and staff must log off when inquiries are complete.
